2 Kings 5:1-15

Psalm 42:2-3, 42:3-4

Luke 4:24-30

Why is it that whenever I want to fast, I become hungrier than usual? Why is it that when I decide to pray, I suddenly become weak and sleepy? Why is it that every time I pick up my Bible, there are a million and one distractions? What do I do?

The answer to these questions may be simpler than you think. You are experiencing what I call “Battleground syndrome” (the concept is completely made up, but the syndrome is real). In simple terms, you are in a battlefield, waging war against the world, the devil and your sinful desires. If you draw a battle line, it is only natural to expect resistance. So, here is how to execute your battle plan to win:

  • Be humble – Remember that God is the one who is leading you in this battle. So, let Him lead (Ephesians 2:13,14).

  • Grace ‘plenty’ – It is only by God’s grace that you will succeed. So, ask God for grace and He will supply it in abundance (Exodus 14:14).

  • Set out with a winning mentality – God has already given you victory. So, ask Him in prayer to help you realise that the victory is yours (2 Corinthians 10:5).

  • Remember why you started – You are engaged in spiritual combat to win your soul. Victory means that your soul belongs to God. Failure means that you are now a slave to the devil (God forbid!).

  • Tailor your observances – Your fasting, prayer and almsgiving (your weapons) should be tailored to your needs. If you need to control your tongue, speak less as a form of fast. If you lack self-control, pray more. If you are selfish, allow someone to get ahead of you in a queue. The goal is to tame your flesh and let God’s spirit lead you (James 1:2).

  • Carry your weapons along with you – Ephesians 6:12-18 lists our spiritual weapons as truth, righteousness, the Word of God, Salvation, Faith, perseverance and constancy in prayer. You have all that it takes to win.

  • Draw strength from the fellowship of the brethren, your brothers and sisters in the faith and the angels and saints in heaven (Hebrews 10:25; 12:1).

  • Refuse to stay down – If you slip up, get back up. If you miss a fast, forgot to pray, or failed to give alms, dust it off and go again. Remember, winners do not quit and quitters do not win ("And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9).

Task: Read the Bible references in today’s reflection and buy someone lunch.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome into the body of Christ. Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Eternal Father, my help comes from You. My strength is in you. I trust in You. I adore and worship You. May I never be separated from You, in life and death through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  2. We are in battle against the flesh, the Devil and the world. We go with God, in the strength of His grace, into this new working week and claim victory through Christ our Lord. Amen.
