The celebration of the Solemn Feast of the Annunciation of the Birth of Jesus Christ is important for several reasons:
This feast celebrates the moment when Jesus took flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary after she said “yes” to God’s plan of salvation, delivered by the Angel Gabriel.
This feast takes place exactly nine months before the birth of Christ, which we celebrate at Christmas.
The action by which Mary conceived Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit is called “Incarnation”.
In the Nicene Creed, we state our belief in the Incarnation when we say, “For us men and our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man.”
John 1:14 says, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us”. 800 years earlier, the Prophet Isaiah said, ‘The maiden is with child and will soon give birth to a son whom she will call Immanuel, a name which means “God-is-with-us”’ (Isaiah 8:10).
Why is the Solemnity of the Annunciation so important?
It is a moment when God makes concrete His plan of salvation through His Son Jesus Christ and by the cooperation of a young virgin.
In the Annunciation, we see that it is possible for divinity to assume humanity and for humanity to be raised to divinity—God became human so that humans can become like God.
We can become so busy that we lose sight of the great things that God is doing around us. The Annunciation invites us to stop and ponder the great things God does in the world every day, which is only perceptible by those who stop, fall silent and listen.
God invites us into an intimate relationship with Him, and this is the most important invitation you will ever receive in life (Jesus says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and everything else will be added”, Matthew 6:33).
The Annunciation is a mystery which continues in our lives every time we humbly accept God’s message, spoken in Scripture and allow it to take root in us.
Just as the Angel Gabriel ministered God’s word to Mary, God speaks to you in your daily situations. Your posture should be that of humility and openness to the work of the Holy Spirit.
Task: Prayerfully read and meditate on Luke 1:38
JUDE-MARY OWOH
To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”
If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome into the body of Christ. Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.
Prayer:
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the Faithful and enkindle in us the fire of your love. Fill my mind with Your wisdom. Fill my heart with Your love. Guide my actions on the path of righteousness and help us to do your will. Amen.
The Word took flesh and dwelt among us. We have seen his glory, full of grace and truth. May Jesus be praised. Amen.
