Today’s Reading:

Judges 2 :6-15

“They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. They aroused the Lord’s anger”.

(v. 12)

Joshua allotted the (promised) land to each of the tribes of Israel and he recommended obedience to God , which they solemnly promised, and they continued faithfully during his life and during the lives of those who had been his contemporaries, but who had survived him. When all that generation who had seen the wonders of God died, then the succeeding generation who knew not the Lord – who had not seen the wonders of God – forsook His worship and worshipped Baalim and Ashtoreths, the gods of the nations among whom they lived, and thus, the Lord was provoked to anger; and this was the reason why they were delivered into the hands of their enemies. In Deuteronomy 6, the Lord gave some specific commands to His people. Failure to obey the commands led to the sad state of affairs described in Judges 2:6-15.

The lack of spiritual leadership after the death of Joshua and his generation resulted in corresponding lack of obedience on the part of God’s people. The previous generation had not taught their children to fear the Lord and to keep His commandments. The neglect of the fathers led to the apostasy on the part of their sons and thus the next generation of Israelites failed.

As a consequence of their failure, the Lord turned the Israelites over to their enemies all around. Every time Israel went out to battle, the Lord fought against them, causing them to be defeated.
