Today’s Reading:

Psalm 20:1-9

“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God”.

(v. 7)

Generally, to “Trust” means to rely on someone or something because you feel safe with him/her/it, and have confidence that you will not be hurt or violated by him/her/. It means to firmly believe in the reliability, truth or ability of someone or something. Biblically, “Trust” signifies a firm reliance on the character, ability, strength or truth of someone or something, particularly God and His power. It is common knowledge that people trust in different things, which include: fellow beings, leaders, riches, intellect, names, power, etc and in God.

In verse 7 of Today’s reading, the Psalmist (David) points out that some trust in chariots and some in horses. This is evident from the Old Testament records, especially in respect of the Israelites, who, when they strayed away from God, trusted kings and armies of other nations for their deliverance or victory in battles. Some of the examples are: When the Israelites were released from Egypt to go to the Promised Land, the then Pharaoh immediately changed his mind. While trusting in his renowned chariots and horses, he pursued the Israelites to bring them back to their land of captivity, Egypt. Another example: The great Philistine warrior, Goliath, trusted in his stature and armour when he challenged Israel to battle (1 Sam. 17). Many kings in the Old Testament days trusted in their strong armies to win battles or wars.

Contrary to all these, we read in the Old Testament books, especially in the Psalms, of those who trusted in the Lord, God. David, further in our reading in v.7, said that they (he and the Israelites) would remember the name of the Lord their God. When David had been delivered from the hand of all his enemies, and King Saul, he recorded in Ps. 18:2 that God was his strength in whom he trusted. He confirmed in verse 30b that God is a shield to all who trust in him. Also in Ps. 31:14, David affirmed that as for him, his trust was in God, and that whenever he was afraid, he would trust in God (Ps. 56:3). It will be interesting to evaluate the outcomes of the different listed sources of trust. The Pharaoh of Egypt, who trusted in his army, chariots and horses, was disappointed, as they all perished in the Red Sea (Ex.14). Goliath was slain with a stone from little David’s sling. Practically all the kings and leaders in the scripture who trusted in everything aside from God and his name lost the battle, and their people perished. However, David and many other kings of the Israelites who trusted in God won all their battles.

No wonder, the Psalmist in Ps 118:8-9 records that it is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man or confidence in princes. In Jer.17:5, it is said that cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength. On the other hand, in verse 7, it is said that blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. The wise king Solomon in Proverbs. 28:26 said that he who trusts in his own heart is a fool. David in our Today’s reading vv. 1-6 confirmed that there are so many benefits that accrue to those who remember and trust in the name of the Lord our God. These include: answers to prayers in the day of trouble; help from his sanctuary; defence, unparalleled strength; remembrance by God and acceptance of offerings and sacrifices; grant of fulfillments of purpose and petitions; safety; and no shame.

It is pertinent to note that you cannot trust those with whom you do not have a relationship, especially God. You need to accept Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as your Lord and Saviour, for you to be entitled to a relationship with God.
