Today’s Reading:
Genesis 25:29–34.
“And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose, and went his way: thus, Esau despised his birthright.”

The above account is about Esau and Jacob and how Esau sold his birthright for a plate of food. There are lessons we ought to learn from this brief account in Genesis 25, verses 29 – 34. Esau sold off his birthright out of a desperation of hunger and later paid the price for it.
What is a birthright?
A particular right of possession or privilege a person has from his/her place of birth
Something that you believe you deserve to have because of your family situation.
Something that is received or owned, especially because of where you were born.
Your divine birthright, therefore, as a child of God, is incorporated in the following scriptures: “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings so that we may also share in his glory.” (Romans 8:16 – 18)
“Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved); And hath raised us together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” (Ephesians 2:5 – 6)
Our divine birthright is encapsuled in the grace that comes with salvation, and as the Scripture above in Romans 8 states, we are co-heirs with Christ in the Kingdom of God.
An heir is a person legally entitled to the property or rank of another.
Your birthright as a child of God:
Eternal life. (John 3:1 -8, vv 14 – 16)
Divine Health. (Isaiah 53:5; Romans 8:11)
Divine Protection. (Psalm 91:1 – 2)
Peace. (Philippians 4:6 – 7; John16:33).
Divine Prosperity. (2 Corinthians 8:9; Joshua 1:8)
Reigning in dominion with Christ. (Psalm 8:3 – 6)
How do you lose your birthright? You lose your birthright through sin, and most importantly, the sins outlined in Galatians 5:19 – 21. These sins are listed as follows:
Adultery
Fornication.
Uncleanness: This is dirty behaviour like having sex with a menstruating woman, oral sex, etc.
Lasciviousness: This means to be filled with sexual desire, especially in dressing.
Idolatry
Witchcraft
Hatred
Variance: This is a situation where someone is always disagreeing with everybody, leading to quarrels, factions and so on
Emulation: A striving to equal or do more than others to obtain carnal favours.
Wrath: anger
Strife: quarrel, struggle, clash, competition.
Sedition: disturbances leading to fighting
Heresies: teachings or doctrines that cannot be supported by the Bible.
Jealousies, murders, drunkenness and so on.
How do we recover our birthright?
You have to be born again
You must bring quality repentance before God
Pray prayers of recovery for your birthright.
Read and meditate on the word of God daily. Joshua 1:8.
Make a conscious and deliberate effort to live holy.
VICTOR ABASSAH
To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”
If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.
Prayers:
1. Powers contending for my birthright in Christ, die in the name of Jesus.
2. My divine birthright as a child of God arises and is located in the name of Jesus.
3. Local powers in my environment contesting my divine birthright die in the name of Jesus.
4. Where I have sold myself, O God, buy me back in the name of Jesus.
