Some people think it is insulting, while others hold it unacceptable to call or refer to Jesus, the Son of God, as the Son of Man. This school of thought, some are among African cultures who are generally very “respectful”. This misconception is borne out of a lack of knowledge of the scripture and the purpose of God. It goes beyond respectfulness or a mistake; rather, it is a biblical fact – Jesus is the Son of Man! It is common knowledge and a truth that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, God’s only begotten Son (John 3:16). God is his Father, and He is his Son. To reconcile man back to God after the fall in Eden (Gen. 3), the Trinity agreed to send Jesus to earth, as the seed of the woman mentioned in Gen. 3:15, who would bruise the head of the serpent who deceived man. So, Jesus was to come down to the earth to accomplish the work of salvation for mankind, and gladly He did about two thousand years later. His coming was prophesied by many prophets and by others, such as the Psalmists, David in particular.

Jesus came to earth in the flesh, as He was born by a woman, Mary, but was conceived by the Holy Spirit (Matt. 1:20). Since Mary was betrothed to Joseph, a descendant of David, Jesus became the Son of Joseph and Mary. So Jesus became the “Son of Man”! It is, therefore, appropriate to call Jesus the “Son of God” and also the “Son of Man”. In several verses, Jesus himself referred to himself as the Son of Man. It has been researched and found out that this is recorded 32 times in the book of Matthew, 14 times in Mark, 26 times in Luke and 10 times in John. Somehow, so for Jesus, the title – Son of Man, clearly and directly associates him with mankind as human, Son of Adam, the first man God created. Mankind is generally weak in nature. It is, therefore, wonderful that Jesus decided and agreed to associate with the weakness and frailty of mankind. This is a great sacrifice on his part. It is said that of all the Christological titles of Jesus, He preferred to be known and called the Son of Man. He showed his disciples that He was human like them. He was a Man, not God, on the earth, despite his dual nature – divine and human.

The benefits to mankind of Jesus being the Son of Man include: having being given authority to execute judgment by God the Father (vs 22, 27); purchased salvation and eternal life for mankind (v24); now sitting on the right hand of God in heaven, He is in a rightful position to intercede for mankind because he had been on the earth and lived like man (Heb. 7:25-26); freedom won for mankind from the shackles of Satan, from sicknesses and diseases, sin, etc. Mankind will be eternally grateful to Jesus, the Son of God and Son of Man. However, anyone who does not accept his sacrifice and resultant salvation He gave to mankind cannot enjoy any of the benefits listed above, and much more. His salvation is free of charge and only requires believing in him and the complete work of salvation He did. Take him as Lord and Saviour, and you will enjoy the benefits attached to his being the Son of Man.
