HEARKEN UNTO HIS VOICE

Today’s Readings:

Psalm 81; Jeremiah 2:4-13; John 7:14-31, 37-39.

The Bible admonishes us to listen to the voice of God if we are to enjoy the blessings, he has earmarked for us and ultimately enjoy eternal life. Failure to listen to God’s voice attracts his wrath and allows the enemy to find his way into our lives and wreak havoc. In fact, it is a rare privilege for God to talk to us, for in truth it gives us an insight into the mind of God. It enables us to walk with God. In Deuteronomy 29 : 29 -The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Daniel 2:22- He reveals the deep and secret things: he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him. In order to listen to the voice of God, reading our Bible becomes imperative. (Joshua 1:8)-This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth: but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shall make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. All the above passages indicate that God talks to us his children. It is therefore not his fault if we fail to listen to his voice. Jesus Christ told us that he is our Shepherd and we are his flock. (John 10:11) I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. In John 10:27. Jesus Christ emphasized the need to hearken unto him. He stated clearly that - My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

God talks to his children in various ways. It can be directly like when he appeared to Moses in the wilderness. It can be through his prophets like when he sent Prophet Nathan to David. It can be through his Angels as shown when Angel Gabriel went to Zachariah to tell him about the birth of John the Baptist. It can also be through visions and dreams like when he warned Joseph to carry Jesus in the dream to Egypt because Herod was after his life. More importantly if we want to hear God’s words, we want him to be speaking to us not occasionally but on daily basis, then it becomes inevitable as clarified above that we must read our Bible every day for inspiration because the Bible is God himself talking to us. The Bible is the Word i.e. Jesus Christ himself. The psalmist says thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee (. Psalm 119 v.11). Prayer is another way of communicating with God. God talks to us through our prayers.

The Bible says - Oh thou that hears prayers unto thee shall all flesh come. My house is the house of prayer. Prayer is discussion with God, a conversation between father and son so as to get direction from God and take the right steps in this world. It is unimaginable that a Christian will leave his house any day without praying or communing with his father. Even Jesus taught us how to pray through what is now generally known as “The Lord’s Prayer”. God also talks to us through Praise and worship. There are so many other means by which God talks to his children. The pertinent question today is, Is God talking to us? The answer is yes but are we listening? It is time to renew our channel of communication with God so that we can enjoy his unprecedented blessings. “For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (-Ephesians 2:10(NKJV) It is our Father’s desire to prosper us in all that we do; to speak forth promotions into our lives, to give us business ideas, divine connections and fruitful partnerships. We stir up the same creative Spirit that made the heavens and the earth to bring forth new ideas and inventions for the betterment of this world, that we can be a blessing to many when we hearken unto him when he talks to us. It is my prayer that we would hear when God talks to us in Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
