FACING GIANTS

Today’s Reading:

1 Samuel 17

In verse 45 of Today’s Reading, David said to Goliath, the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God the armies of Israel whom you have defied.” Goliath had been on for forty days terrorising the armies of Saul and the entire Israelites. His demand was simple but also difficult to meet. “Give me a man from among you who will fight with me.” Out of the numerous number of men that had been well- trained and skilled in manners of weapon, nobody could measure up to the challenge, not even the king. Giants, if they show up at all, have one mission - Silence everybody and make God look incapable.

David showed up at the battlefield. Not as a warrior but as an errand boy. He might have had experience killing bears and lions but never a business facing a giant. If at all he did, not Goliath, the man from Gath who had an intimidating curriculum vitae. His boasting and taunting words had been going on for days. They all thought it was all about them, but didn’t know it was all about God. This informed his first knowledge of the battle - in facing giants, always know that the battle is first of all against your God. And if it is against Him, you have someone to lean on. Not only this, everybody was looking at a very tall warrior but David? No! Not at any time did ever refer to him as Goliath. He addressed him as, “this uncircumcised Philistines.” When everybody was looking up, David was looking at his boxer. Again, in facing the giant, see them for who they are in accordance to God’s word, not how the world describes them. Never exaggerate giants. The more attention you give to them, the taller and bigger they seem/become.

They gave to David all the ammunition he has never used in his life to confront the giant but he knew they were not meant for him. From his walking relationship with God, he knew that it a battle of the word. He used the name of the Lord and that was all he needed to the fight. The reason you have been losing the battle of life is because you have been engaging wrong weapons. Giants, you must face but not alone. Only with the Lord’s help. Everybody saw a problem, but David saw an opportunity. Giants are opportunities for greatness. Philippians 2:8-9 says, “…that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is the LORD, to the glory of God the Father.”
