Today’s Readings:

Acts 8:26-40

Psalm 66:8-9,16-17,20

John 6:44-51

“And the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.” (John 6:51)

Some things change when we are well nourished:

  • We are satisfied.

  • We receive strength.

  • We refine our appetite.

  • We despise junk.

  • We replenish worn-out tissues.

  • We build our immune system.

  • We show others the importance of healthy eating.

  • We grow in soundness of mind, soul and body.

  • Our food becomes our medicine and vice versa.

Our souls crave health much more than our bodies. It is our responsibility to care for our souls much more than our bodies. The Penny Catechism teaches that our souls will outlive our mortal bodies. To despise the soul’s growth is to embrace death. Some of us even treat our bodies just as badly as our souls, but that is another story. Jesus’ words draw our attention to the Eucharist, His true Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, by which we need to be connected to Him, the source of supernatural vitality. Christians who are worth their salt understand that without the Eucharist, their souls are malnourished and are prone to the attacks of the evil one. Along with daily reading of Scriptures, the Eucharist fuels our love for God and disposes us to how God wishes to use us to spread the Gospel to others.

Spiritual health is only a first step. The purpose of life is to have a sense of duty towards ourselves and others who are in search of spiritual nourishment. Philip (in the first reading) responds to the Spirit’s nudge, which led him to convert an Ethiopian eunuch chilling in his equivalent of the Rolls-Royce. As the eunuch studied God’s word, he grew in wisdom, but he knew something was missing. His hunger led him to an Apostle, then to the waters of baptism by which he entered a relationship with God. There is greater joy in having true spiritual health than in appearing healthy (do you know the difference?). Hunger for Christ, and you shall become what you eat.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Eternal Father, thank you for the gifts of your Word and Eucharist. Satisfy my hunger, heal me of the wounds of sin, shield me from the enemy’s attacks and transform me by the power in Your word and sacrament. Amen.

  2. Eternal Father, give me strength which flows from Your Precious Body and Blood. Make me worthy to receive you in the Eucharist, to be enlightened by Scriptures and recommit myself to spread light, love and peace. Amen.
