Today’s Reading:
Exodus 12:1-14
"In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord’s Passover." (v. 11)
In the passage read, God instructed Moses and Aaron to prepare the Israelites for the greater manifestation of His power to be displayed in the land of Egypt and on all the Egyptians. God had performed many signs and wonders, but Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go. Whenever God is about to do something remarkable that will glorify His name in the land, He will always give a guideline to be followed strictly by His children in order not to be a victim.
God told the Israelites to do the following in order to protect them from intending calamity on the land of Egypt:
Take a lamb for a household and shall be without blemish, a male of the first year.
You shall kill it at twilight, shall take some of the blood and put it on the two door posts and on the lintel of the houses where you eat it.
You shall eat the flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat it raw, nor boiled with water. None must remain till morning and what remain shall be burnt with fire.
You shall eat it with a belt on your waist, sandals on your feet, and staff in your hands and eat it in haste.
The Passover is a memorial of the redemption of the Exodus from Egypt and rejoicing in God’s salvation. The gospels portray the Last Supper as done in accordance with the command to observe the Passover according to Exodus 12. It would have been a Passover meal, to which Jesus gave an additional meaning without denying or replacing its primary meaning, and certainly without abrogating the command to observe it at its appointed time. Celebration of Jesus goes along with the Passover, and since it took place some days later, both can be celebrated. As Israelites partook of the Passover sacrifice by eating it, Christians commemorate Jesus’ death by taking part in the Eucharist (Holy Communion), claiming that it is an enactment of what Jesus is said to have instituted at the Last supper (1 Corinthians 11:20-34). We believe that the elements are changed into Jesus’ body and blood, which we eat and drink.
Passover is salvation by the atoning blood of a perfect, spotless sacrificed lamb. Christians now follow the instructions that Jesus gave to his disciples at the time of his last meal before he was crucified and shared instead of roasted lamb, bread (usually unleavened) and wine. In Christian Passover service the unleavened bread is used to represent Jesus’ body, and wine represents his blood of the New Covenant( Luke 22:19-20.) These are a symbolic substitute for Jesus as the true sacrificial Passover “Lamb of God”( John 1:29).
There is a lot of wickedness, kidnapping, killing of innocent people, fraudulent acts etc going on in the earth today and God is about to Pass through the earth in destruction and judgment. Jesus Christ is our Passover Lamb. The only thing that can save you and I is the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on the cross of Calvary. Will you give your life to Jesus Christ today? Allow his blood to be a covering for you in this time of insecurity and wickedness.
