Do you know that the idea that God wishes to catch us unawares is not scriptural? God is not playing a hide-and-seek game with us. When the Scriptures warn us that God will come like a thief in the night, it is basically telling us that procrastination is dangerous. Nothing should be postponed, time should never be wasted, and every moment is an opportunity. This should be your understanding. So, if you are where you ought to be, doing what you ought to do at all times, you have no fear of being caught unawares.

Saint Paul details the life that we all should live in 1 Thessalonians 5 in readiness to meet Christ when he returns:

  • God comes like a thief in the night: He will not announce his coming any more than He does each day whenever His word is proclaimed and preached.

  • As sudden as labour pain: God’s kingdom does not give room for last-minute work or working under pressure. Do what you need to do at the right time. Otherwise, Christ’s coming will spring on you as suddenly as labour pains, just like the sudden passing of a loved one.

  • We do not belong to the dark: Being in the dark means that we give in to procrastination, laziness and sinfulness.

  • You are light and day: Be aware of your duties and do them diligently as though today is all there is. Love people, forgive and follow the teachings of the Church diligently

  • Do not sleep: Those who dwell in sin are asleep. It is a slumber that leads to death.

  • Stay sober: There is no tomorrow for anyone who chooses to procrastinate. Do not numb yourself to pain by abusing substances. Drugging yourself is a second layer of slumber where you choose escape instead of confronting and overcoming your weaknesses.

  • God wants us to be ready: God is not in the business of punishing anyone. He wants us to excel in life by loving Him above everything and loving our neighbour as ourselves.

  • Christ died for you: We dare to do what is right by the merits of Christ’s sacrificial death. We do what is right by realising that we are connected to others and they feed from the fruits of our good works.

  • Christ United: Our life on earth is a dress rehearsal for our life in heaven. You will only make heaven if your life on earth has prepared you for it. If you do not love God on earth, you are setting yourself up for destruction.

  • Encourage others: Today is the best time to start living the life God created you to live, a life of love and sacrifice.

  • Strengthen everyone: You owe everyone you know a debt of prayer. Pray for yourself, for your siblings, parents, co-workers, employer, employees, collaborators, friends and even strangers. We all should desire heaven for each other. We all need prayer, and I pray for you, too.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest.

Prayer:

  1. May the Lord be your light and your help.

  2. May the Lord be the stronghold of your life.

  3. May you always abide in the house of the Lord and savour the sweetness of His grace.

  4. May the Lord’s goodness and favour follow you all the days of your life.

  5. May your hope always be in Him. Amen.
