PURPOSE OF THE ANOINTING YOU RECEIVE

Today’s Reading:

I John 2:26-28

“But the anointing you have received from him abides in you….the same teaches you concerning all things, is true and not a lie….” (v. 27)

In plain language, ‘Anointing’ is what enables one to do supernatural things. It is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer. It, therefore, enables believers to have a spiritual connection in their Christian walk. It enables the believer to understand, apply and administer spiritual truth. Anointing is the burden-removing and yoke-bearing power of God. It is what empowers a person to function supernaturally. In the Christian circle, anointing expresses the sanctification of the Holy Spirit on those chosen or elected for God’s services, especially priests, or rulers/leaders. The Old Testament records many such ceremonies of anointing - Aaron, David, Elisha, and Isaiah (Is. 61:1) were all anointed men of God.

  • The question is asked- Who is the source or who gives the Anointing?

In 2 Cor 1:21, it is written that it is God who anoints us as believers. It is confirmed and interesting to read that even Jesus Christ was anointed by God, for his mission on earth (Acts 10:38, Luke 4:18). In I John 2:20, it says that believers have an anointing from the Holy One - God.

  • What is the purpose of the “Anointing”?

In today’s reading, we see in verse 27 that the anointing received teaches one concerning all things. It is one of the greatest benefits of God as the believer keys directly into God’s mighty power. Therefore, one is established, grounded and rooted in Christ during the Christian walk on earth. Furthermore, the believer is anointed to operate in the power of the Holy Spirit for healing the sick (James 5:14), casting out demonic spirits (Acts 13:6-11). Also, the anointed one is stabilized, strengthened, protected, helped to be faithful, and generally to be used by God on earth. For instance, it is written in 1 Sam 16:13 that when David was anointed, the Spirit of the Lord came upon him from that day. No wonder he was able to exploit, especially as a great warrior!

  • How does one get the Anointing or who can receive the Anointing?

Gladly enough, the simple condition for receiving the Anointing is becoming a child of God (Christian) who has accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour that is, being born again’. When this happens, God sends the Holy Spirit to the person’s heart and begins to live/abide in him/her (v.27). The Spirit ensures that old things pass away and all things become new in the person’s life (2 Cor 5:17).

Furthermore, as a result of the new life in Christ, all believers receive the anointing as He did from God, to carry out the Great Commission of the church (soul winning and discipleship) (Mark 16:15-18, Mt 28:19). The believer must remain (abides) in the Anointing by – fervent prayer; spending time reading and acting on the word of God; exercising faith in the name of Jesus; praying in the Spirit; regular worship, praise and thanksgiving.

Some of the benefits of the Anointing include–

• one will know all things (v 20);

• will be taught by the anointing (v. 27);

• will not be deceived (v. 26);

• known to be true, not a liar;

• He abides in one (v. 27).

When you have received the Anointing and as the purpose is being carried out through you, ensure to keep abiding in Him as He is abiding in you.

CHRISTIE KUPOLUYI

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank You, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and report to the resident pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the provision of the Anointing.

  4. Lord, let Your anointing fill and operate maximally within the body of Christ, so that signs and wonders will happen.
