Before celebrity status became about fame and wealth, it was the celebration of people who seek the truth and make it their life’s purpose. One of the things we like about our favourite celebrities today is that they are relatable; they can go off script, they can be wild, they can do what others are afraid to do. We admire these traits because they reveal our deepest desire.
Our deepest desire is to be loved and appreciated. We want everyone to know or recognise us wherever we go. Our needs are not so different from those who have gone before us. While we seek validation, fame and money, we are seeking purpose (our God-given identity). The answer to this is found in today’s celebration of the Apostles Philip and James. Philip was born at Bethsaida and started as a disciple of John the Baptist. After John the Baptist’s death, he followed Christ. James, the son of Alphaeus, also called “James the Less”, ruled the Church at Jerusalem, wrote an epistle, led an austere life, and converted many Jews to the Faith. He was crowned with martyrdom in the year 62. By seeking truth, both Apostles lead us closer to our deepest aspiration—to be happy, to live securely and find peace in this world and eternity. They found this truth in Christ, who says, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
By following Christ, we too shall embody the ideals which the Father has shown forth in His Son. What you hope to gain by fame is truly found in following the Lord. The validation you seek from social media likes and comments is truly found in the sacrificial death and resurrection of Christ, who gave Himself up for you. And you will rest easy if you realise that Jesus has made provision for you, and all you need to do is ask in prayer and work diligently (Psalm 50:15).
Follow Christ resolutely so that others see Him in you.
Seek the truth and embody it.
Do not make a habit of telling lies and contradicting yourself.
Pray for a fresh indwelling of the Holy Spirit, so that you think, speak and behave always like a child of God. Do not be drunk with wine or abuse any other substance in the name of "minister of enjoyment".
Flee from sin and the occasions which incite you to be rebellious to God’s commands.
Use God’s gifts to serve others and to spread the message of the Gospel (love of God and neighbour).
Use your time well and purposefully so that every moment feels like an eternity.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”
If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.
Prayer:
Lord, I entrust myself to Your care. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, that my life may glorify You, my words may speak of You and may I dedicate my life to spreading the truth of Your grace and mercy. Amen.
Lord Jesus Christ, let my life lead others to you. Receive the glory for all I think, say and do today. Amen.
