Jesus’ command to the seventy-two disciples seems reckless. He sends them out in pairs to places they have not previously visited. He reminds them that they will be vulnerable, like lambs among wolves (in danger of being assaulted or even killed). They are to carry no supplies or security. The only password they need is ‘Peace to this house’. They are to depend on others for nourishment and shelter. Wherever they are welcome, they should cure the sick and declare that God’s kingdom is very near to them. That is reckless, or is it? The mission of calling people into God’s kingdom is Christ’s mission. We are his collaborators. He has the blueprint design of how He wishes to run his operation. What looks like recklessness to us is God’s invitation to rely on divine providence. God will provide what you need to execute the mission He has entrusted to you. We ought to assume the posture of his disciples if we want to be successful in our life’s mission.

Do you still remember your mission?

Our mission is to know God, to love Him and serve Him, and to make Him known and loved. The message you carry is a message of peace. Not everyone wants peace. So, when your message is rejected, move on. Appear harmless, do not proceed with violence, but be capable of it.

Be gentle as doves, yet cunning as serpents!

Christianity is not cowardice. Arm yourself with the necessary skills to defend yourself, but never use them unless it becomes necessary. Feel free to make your plan, but remember that the final execution rests with God, who provides food for the birds of the air and beasts of the field. Trust Him to provide for you. Your provision is not more important than your mission. Do your assignment, and your needs shall be met. Your mission is not a money-making enterprise. Do not be distracted by the financial fruits of your work. God will always provide (trust Him). Do not be lazy. You will become a burden on others and a waste to society. Put all your gifts to appropriate use and watch the growth which God will produce from your effort.

Be like Luke the Evangelist!

He is the writer of one of the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. His Gospel portrays Jesus as the Saviour for all people, not just the Jewish nation. This inclusivity is seen in his attention to Gentiles, outcasts, the marginalised, and the poor, highlighting themes of compassion and social justice. Saint Luke is also the patron saint of artists. What gifts do you possess, and how are you using them to further the mission entrusted to you by Christ?

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Eternal Father, thank you for the power flowing from your Word. Strengthen me to do what lies in my power, while relying on Your grace. Bless the works of my hands and bless others through me. Amen.

  2. May Almighty God fill you with power flowing from His Word and strengthen you to use your gifts for His glory. May God bless the works of my hands and bless others through you. Amen.

TASK FOR THE DAY:

Pray for the people struggling with difficult marriages.
