Lamentation 3:19-26

“Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope,” (Lamentation 3:21)

Tina was such a lovely young girl with a very bright future. She grew up in an atmosphere of love, with her parents showering her attention. After her post-primary education, she was offered admission into a private university to study medicine. She was the best graduating student. This allowed the whole family to travel down to her school to celebrate the feat. Tina waited to receive her family on the eve of the convocation, but her waiting was endless. The news was hidden from her until the celebration was over. The whole family died in a ghastly automobile accident. Tina could not recover from the shock. After several months, her last statement on the hospital bed before she passed on was, ‘I have no hope.’

The word ‘hope’ seems to be absent in most people’s dictionaries because of the hopelessness that we see and experience. No place is safe in the world. No system of government (monarchical, totalitarian, communism, parliamentarianism and so on) has been able to provide needed succour for the populace. Heads are bowed, scientists are confused, the wise and star readers could not accurately predict the next thing that will happen in our world, even strong nations of the world are facing natural disasters, and it seems they are helpless. Is there any hope for us? The situation of the Israelites in the passage above was that of devastation of the land, Jerusalem and the people. The fall of Jerusalem symbolised the termination of Israel as a free and independent nation. And when a nation loses its freedom, such a nation has lost its identity. The writer expresses grief, despair and misery in verses 1 to 20. But from verses 19 to 29, the writer expressed hope in God. Hope should not be vague and empty; rather, it should hold on to something.

The hope of the writer was hanging on the following:

  • God’s Mercies: Mercy speaks of pardon even when one is guilty. It is only by God’s mercy that we have not been consumed. No matter how hopeless your situation may be, as long as you are still on this side of the divide, God’s mercy is still working for you.

  • His Compassion: God’s compassion is manifested in how he relates with us; he doesn’t deal with us by the gravity of our sin (Psalm 103:10-17). He cares for us more than we can imagine. Do you notice his caring hand in your life?

  • His faithfulness is great: Being faithful means to be steadfast in affection or allegiance. Even when we stray, God is still looking for us. That is why Christianity is not like other religions. Other religions of the world are man’s search for God, while Christianity is God’s search for man. Even in your hopeless situation, God is still faithful. The Lord is our portion; He is good to those who wait for Him.

Have you lost hope in everything? Do not forget that as long as you still have life, there is hope for you. The Bible says, A living dog is better than a dead lion (Ecclesiastes 9:4). You are far better than those in the grave. Never give up, keep trying, and you will succeed. Tell yourself there is hope for me. Committing suicide is a grave offence, and such an individual will end it in hell, because it is only God who gave life that dares to take it. Stand up and keep going, there is light after the tunnel. I see you rising above that challenge, for joy comes in the morning. Hallelujah!

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Strengthen my wearied heart, Oh Lord

  2. Every thought of hopelessness, I erase them by the blood of Jesus

  3. I deliver my life from the grip of past mistakes that are telling me there is no hope for me in Jesus' name

  4. Every hopeless situation in my life, let the fire of God visit and bring them back to life in Jesus' name.

  5. Oh Lord, visit every dry bone in my life in Jesus' name.
