Today’s Reading:
Psalm 146:5-10
“Happy is he who has God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God.” (v.5)

There are many statements about help which include: “God is the help of the helpless”; “my help comes from above”; “do not trust in the help of man”; “the help of man is empty”; etc. Naturally, human beings need and want to be helped for different reasons, such as: lack or inadequacy of resources (poverty), ill or poor health, inadequate strength, release from attacks from the devil and fellow men, etc. Sources of help include: fellow mankind, the governments, the family, the occult world, the body of Christ, God of the universe and other minor sources. “Help” can be defined as: means or strength given to another for a purpose, such as listed above. It is assistance; relief. To help means to aid or assist another to achieve his purpose. To contribute towards the success of a purpose; to give means for doing something; to provide or supply for another. Aside from the secular world, the scripture is full of instances in which people are recorded to have gotten help from others, and also from God. The greatest and oldest beneficiaries of God’s help were the Israelites, God’s chosen people of the nation of Israel. They are said to have received help from God and fellow men in every area of their lives. Many books of the scripture, especially the Psalms, have records of the help of God to individuals and nations, especially the Israelites. The Psalmist in Ps. 121 v2 acknowledged that his help came from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. David in Ps. 124 v8 acknowledged that his and his people, Israel’s help was in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. In Is. 41 v 10, the prophet Isaiah delivered the message of God to the Israelites that He promised to help them, and uphold them with his righteous right hand; therefore, they should not fear.
In v5 of today’s reading, it is interesting to note that the Psalmist says that happy is he who has the God of Jacob (Israel) for his help. Why would the Psalmist say so? This is because in both the heavens and the earth, no other help is sure and can be compared to that of God. The scripture is full of verses which prove this. In Ps. 73 v26, it is written by the Psalmist that his flesh and his heart fail, but God is the strength of his heart. The prophet Jeremiah in Jer. 17:5 told the people that the Lord said that cursed is the man who trusts in man, and makes flesh his strength…. In v3 of today’s reading, the Psalmist warns that one should not put their trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help. He further analysed the situation as this: if the man in whom you trust dies and his spirit departs, he returns to his earth (from which he was formed), and on that very day, his plans perish. What a fact! There is no help in man, but in God. King Hezekiah encouraged the Israelites when the King of Assyria invaded Judah (2 Chr. 32:8), that with him was the arm of flesh, but with the Israelites was the Lord their God to help them and to fight their battles. It is recorded that the people were strengthened by the words of Hezekiah, the King. It is pertinent to highlight some of the reasons why the help of God can be relied on. These are strongly based on the facts of the nature and character of God. These include: his sovereignty, mighty power, unsearchable knowledge, wisdom and greatness, his love, grace and justice. Also, his compassion, holiness, mercy, forgiving spirit, long-suffering nature, faithfulness and graciousness.
However, if you do not have a one-on-one relationship with God, you may not be able to tap into his help easily. You need to be born again, by accepting and keying into the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, his Son. Make him your Lord and Saviour, and then the help of God the Father becomes yours. When you have the help of God and all the attached benefits, you will be happy.
