Today’s Reading:

Psalm 21:1-13

“You have given him his heart’s desire, and have not withheld the request of his lips.”   (v. 2)

The “heart” is an organ in the body in which emotions, instinct and desires lodge. The scripture says in Prov. 4:23 that one should keep the heart with all diligence, for out of it springs the issues of life. These could be positive or negative issues. Also, it is written in Lk 6:45, that a good man out of the treasure of his heart brings forth good, and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. The heart, therefore, is a very important and crucial part of a man’s life. A lot depends on it. “Desire” is defined generally as: an earnest longing for or wish for something; a request; a strong wish to have or do something. Spiritually, desire is said to be an expression of the innermost being of man. It springs out from deep within the human being, and it is said to have enduring power. Desires come from within a man’s heart, and not from the mind which accommodates thoughts, feelings and actions. Desires can be expressed in terms of wanting, wishing, longing or craving. They could be physical (material things, safety); intellectual (including quest for knowledge and even God); economic (wealth, well-being); spiritual (things of God, including praise, worship, love for him, knowledge and growth in him). Spiritual desires are essentially God-centered (Micah 6:8). Many of the Psalmists, especially David, have opened our eyes to the fact that if one delights oneself in the Lord, He shall give him the desires of his heart. Also, Solomon in Prov. 16:3 admonishes that one should commit one’s works to the Lord, and his desires and thoughts will be established.

In v2 of today’s reading, David confirms that the Lord had given him his heart’s desire and had not withheld the request of his lips. God truly meets with the desires of our hearts as believers, because of his love, nature, and character, and it delights him to do so. The question to ask is – what motivates God to give to man the desires of his heart? God is holy, pure and sovereign; therefore, He does not dwell, see or associate with any sin, unrighteousness, iniquity or anything contrary to him and his character. As loving as He is, He does not love the sin of man. Rather, He has already made provision for man’s purity through His Son Jesus Christ. The sacrifice for sin had been made, and man reconciled back to God after the fall in Eden (Gen.3). It is now left to everyone to accept the sacrifice and make Jesus Lord and Saviour. This done, the person is born again, becomes a new creation washed clean with the blood of Jesus and purified spirit, soul and body. The heart becomes renewed to have godly emotions, instincts and desires. The person is now able to dream, visualise and imagine the things of God and those to please him. This will become the will of God. As he begins to trust in the Lord like David in v7, many benefits are added to his life. The added benefits to David from our passage include: request of lips not withheld (v2); the blessings of goodness met (v3); head crowned with a crown of pure gold. David further asked for life, and God gave him, and also length of days forever and ever. Honour and majesty, with great glory, were placed upon him and blessed forever (v5). Through the mercy of God most high, he would not be moved, and he would overcome all his enemies and those who hate him (v2 8-12).

To fully benefit from God as He gives you your heart’s desire, you need to: have and build your faith in him, disconnect yourself from the world, prepare your heart to receive from him, stir away from all hindrances, live a life of love for him and fellow men and letting your thoughts and words align with his will (Ps 37:3-4, Heb.12:1-2, 1 Cor 13:13, Mk 11:23).
