Today’s Readings:
Jonah 1:1-2:1,11
Jonah 2:3-5,8
Luke 10:25-37

We often hear today’s parable as an invitation to be like the Good Samaritan, showing kindness and generosity to the one in need. But the story can also be heard from the point of view of the wounded traveller, lying by the roadside, half dead—from the point of view of brokenness. Most of us have felt a form of brokenness at some point in life. We can be broken in body through illness, broken in spirit after a painful loss, or simply worn down and exhausted from work. In Jesus’ parable, the Jewish traveller receives help not from those he might have expected (the priest or the Levite) but from someone he would have thought of as an enemy, the Samaritan. The compassion of God came to him through the most unlikely of people.
The story of the Good Samaritan reminds us that in our moments of weakness, the Lord may come to us in ways that surprise us. God’s mercy can reach us through people we least expect, even those with whom we may feel we share little. Jonah was fleeing from God because he felt nothing for the Ninevites he had been chosen to preach to. But he learnt this same compassion when his disobedience put the lives of others in danger of shipwreck. He chose to be thrown into the sea to spare the lives of others. Self-sacrifice is at the heart of obedience and compassion. And we owe this to one another.
Keep your heart open to everyone around you and to the unexpected.
Pray for the strength to serve others even in your weakness.
Be open to receiving help from whoever God sends your way in your time of need.
Check on someone who is going through a loss or a form of brokenness.
Say a prayer for someone you may consider written off as no good.
Pray for your ongoing conversion and work on your weaknesses.
Lend a helping hand to someone in need as the occasion presents itself.
Affirm someone you see doing something worthwhile, and do not just look out for occasions to condemn and run others down.
Create space for God; He draws near in the most surprising ways and at the most unexpected times.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”
If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest.
Prayer:
Eternal Father, you look out for our good and send us help from unexpected sources.
May your presence go before me today to make provision in thoughtful ways.
Dispose my heart to reach out to others in a spirit of compassion and kindness. Amen.
