What happens when a person who is associated with their faith begins to act out of character? Today, we are presented with Moses and Peter. God spoke face-to-face with Moses. But after leading the Israelites for so many years, trying to get them into the Promised Land, they arrive at Meribah. The people started to grumble as they have always done. They complained that they did not have water to drink. Moses and Aaron went quietly and presented themselves to God. God instructs Moses to strike a rock and provide them with water. He obeys, and water gushed forth from a rock to the delight of the Israelites. But God tells Moses that he will not enter the Promised Land because he did not defend God’s sanctity before the people. Isn’t that a bit harsh, given all that Moses had been through?

Saint Peter, out of the Apostles, reveals Jesus’ identity as the Anointed One (the Christ), the Son of the Living God. He called Jesus God, and this delighted our Lord. And Jesus calls him the Rock, the one on whom the leadership of the Church shall rest. But shortly after, Jesus calls Peter “Satan” and a hindrance because he tries to convince Jesus not to take the path of suffering to His glory (Matthew 16:23). Again, a harsh comment for a seemingly harmless concern. Why the aggression against Moses and Peter?

  • The closer we draw to God, the more He reveals Himself to us and the more we know about Him and love Him.

  • Your whole being, Spirit, soul and body, belongs to God. Your thoughts, words, desires and actions should flow from the divine source. Otherwise, you have lent yourself as a vessel for evil.

  • With deeper knowledge should come deeper love for God. And with deeper love ought to come a deeper understanding of God’s ways.

  • When we fail to recognise what God is doing and give in to worry and despair, instead of remaining faithful, we incur divine wrath.

  • When we betray God before others by carelessness of speech, behaviour or way of life, the consequences are graver for us than for those who know less about God.

  • You should never settle for mediocrity because you are afraid of a bigger responsibility. If you have a capacity for more and you settle for less, you are like that proverbial steward who hid his Master’s talent and was stripped on the day of reckoning.

  • The best testimony you will ever give is your way of life. It will speak for you long after you are gone. It will convict others of their ignorance and lack of faith. It will heal those who are broken and lend credence to those who are struggling with the same things you courageously endured.

  • Give a good account of yourself online and offline. Do not live simply for the moment and for cheap approval. Those who praise you today might turn against you tomorrow. But if you live virtuously, you will receive a just reward and behold divine glory eternally.

  • Live today as though it were your last, and do what is right today because it might be your last chance.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest.

PRAYER:

  1. Eternal Father, I acknowledge that my life is Yours. My whole being belongs to You. I desire to know you more today. I want to do what is right in your sight. Banish selfishness from my life. Let my happiness and peace come from doing what pleases You through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  2. Perfection is a journey which requires patience, trust and confidence in God who calls, leads and perfects us. May the Joy of the Lord continue to bless and strengthen you. Amen.

Good morning and a grace-filled day to you. Amen.
