John 17:11-19

Everything changed when I decided to hand myself over to God and desire to do His will. Why is this so important? It is so because we, left to our own devices and understanding, will only act in a way that favours us; in a way that promotes our selfish desires. Many times, when people speak about morality, it is only as it suits them, not as things should be. They give no thought to how their actions pleases or displeases God, or either promotes or destroys the wellbeing of their neighbour. It is always as it pleases and favours me. When we think, speak and act selfishly, we are not being wise. I realised that in doing things God’s way, there is a way in which things ought to be done and I am unable to do it unaided by God’s grace.

Today we celebrate Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274), an Italian Dominican friar, born into a noble family in Roccasecca. He dedicated his life to the pursuit of truth and holiness through study, teaching and writing. The preface of today's Mass adds that God: “clothed him with the clear light of divine wisdom”. Thomas Aquinas defines wisdom as the pursuit of truth and goodness and fleeing from error or falsehood. To flee falsehood is to flee from selfishness and anything that takes away from the dignity and good of our neighbour. To flee falsehood is to run away from evil. This way, we desire to do what pleases God and fills us with peace and lasting joy.

Here are a few things you should do to gain wisdom:

  • Hand your day over to God in prayer.

  • Soak yourself in the Word of God. Without the Scriptures, it is impossible to know God’s will.

  • Whenever you are in doubt, seek the wise person who has age, experience and the fear of God.

  • Do not derail or deceive anyone knowingly. When others ask your advice, speak truthfully.

  • Have a special devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Thomas Aquinas describes the Eucharist as food for the journey. "In our pilgrimage, [Christ] does not deprive us of His bodily presence, but unites us with Himself in this sacrament through the truth of His Body and Blood" (Summa Theologiae, part III, question 75, article 1).

  • Grow and do not be stuck in your ways. Learn to grow up and evolve in your understanding and cooperation with grace.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Lord, I trust in You. Help me to do good.

  2. Help me that I may draw closer to You and dwell securely in the land that You have provided and enjoy security.

  3. Help me to take delight in Your law. And grant me the good desires of my heart.

  4. I commit myself to Your ways and I know that You act in my favour. Grant me justice, O Lord. Give me light, brighten my day with Your glory. Fill my mouth with wisdom, so that my tongue may utter what is true.

  5. Let your law be embedded in my heart, so that my steps may never falter, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

  6. Wisdom 9:4-18 Give me the wisdom that sits by Your throne, and do not reject me from among Your servants. For I am Your handmaid. Amen.
