Today’s Reading:
Joshua 5:10-12
“And the day after they ate from the produce of the land, the manna ceased. Since there was
no more manna for the Israelites, they ate from the crops of the land of Canaan that year’’
(v. 12)
Manna means: What is this? Because when the Israelites saw it they said, "what is this? " It was not visually clear to them what it was, but it's purpose was to sustain them in the wilderness until they made it to the land God promised them. Manna was heavenly bread sent
from God as provisions for Israel as they wandered in the wilderness for forty years. It appeared each morning as dew on the grass and melted away as the sun grew hot in temperature. The people gathered it each day according to their households. No more, no less. If anyone gathered more than they needed and tried to store it up, it would spoil, smell and become infested with worms. Exodus 16:15-21, 31 & 35.
After four hundred and thirty years of slavery in Egypt and forty years of wandering in the wilderness, the Children of Israel were finally ready for God to bring them into their Promised Land. But the journey into their God given land didn't come without prerequisites. Their forty years in the wilderness were still subject to God's will within a few days and their commitment thereafter.
When Moses died while the Children of Israel were still in the wilderness the voice of the Lord came to Joshua, who had served Moses for many years, and instructed him to lead all of Israel across the Jordan River into their promised land (Joshua 1:1-3). After successfully sending spies into the land and God's display of power, by holding back the waters of the Jordan River, allowing Israel to pass through on dry land, the Israelites were now camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, ready to seize their first victory (Joshua 3:15-17, 4:19-24).
WHY DID MANNA CEASED? It is interesting that the manna ceased to come down after Israel celebrated the Passover in the Promised Land. We can understand why it should be after they entered into the land:
It was to end a remarkable era and marks a major turning point for Israel. Considering that the manna had appeared every day but the Sabbath for forty years, or more than twelve thousand times.
The manna was a temporary, supernatural provision while Israel journeyed through the barren wilderness.
The Israelites had been tenderly nursed with manna during that time, but now they were to stand forth in maturity and, from their own labor, eat the bread/fruit of the land.
Now that they entered the promised land "land flowing with milk and honey," there was no longer any need for such a temporary provision of manna.
Manna is a temporary provision required or needed to sustain human being in the journey of life, in the wilderness of this earth. Manna could be seen has God supply to our request in prayer-basic needs. God’s power in form of deliverance & miracle. But when we get to heaven, we will no longer need those temporary provisions because permanent provisions are readily available by God. Heaven is for those who has given their lives to Jesus Christ and their names written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. The overcomers (Revelation 21:3-7; 22-27).
