WHAT IS SO URGENT?

Today’s Readings:

Amos 7:12-15

Psalm 85:9-14

Ephesians 1:3-14

Mark 6:7-13

When we receive a phone call and the voice of the caller sounds urgent, we respond immediately. We intently listen and then decisively act. Jesus’ summons of the Twelve is such a “phone call”.

Why is this mission so urgent? The mission is urgent because what is at stake is our relationship with God and each other. What is the mission about? Jesus sends the Twelve out to preach repentance. Why is repentance so important?

  • Repentance heals the wounds that create separation.

  • Repentance overflows into forgiveness.

  • Repentance changes our behaviour.

  • Repentance is basic to growth in our covenantal fidelity.

  • Repentance restores us to wholeness (“holy and spotless,” Ephesians 1:4)

It is an awesome privilege that Jesus entrusts his mission to us. We cannot ignore Jesus’ command performance to preach repentance. This mission is so urgent that he must use us to reach out to all people at all times to bring them salvation. But the only way we can be successful is to make sure that our mission, is indeed, that of Jesus. We are disciples sent on a mission with an agenda. With our power and talent, we can do little; but with a deep relationship with Jesus and realizing that we are carrying on his saving work, we can do much. The world will want to advise you to focus on your ambition instead. When your focus is on yourself alone, failure is never far off. Your true purpose lies in making Christ’s saving message known.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and report to the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Lord, here I am since you have called me.

  2. Lord, help me to take your mission of reconciliation seriously.

  3. Lord, help me to repent of my sins and inspire others to do the same.

  4. Lord, strengthen me against the fear of rejection from people.

  5. Lord, give me conviction about your message, as unpopular as it may sound.

  6. Lord, help me to give of myself (time, talent and treasures) to bring others to You.

  7. Lord, heal me of the wounds of sin so that my life does not scandalize others.

  8. Lord, heal my relationships and make me strong in faith.

  9. Lord, may I not succumb to fears of failure.

  10. Lord, crown all my words and actions with success for Your glory. Amen.

  11. May God fill your heart with wisdom to know right from wrong and love to desire your good and the good of others always in Jesus' name. Amen.
