Mark 9:38-40

“Pride”, they say, “goes before a fall.” This is because a proud person sees no one beyond himself, and does not see any other relationship beyond the one that serves them. They do not answer to anyone except themselves. This is a very dangerous path to thread. Why? You are a human person. You have limitations and flaws; you have insecurities you are dealing with. And because you do not see the need for divine or human assistance (the need for prayer or material help), you are immediately in danger of losing salvation because when you fall, there is no one else to turn to.

Jesus warned his disciples not to stop the man who was performing miracles in His name. In his own words, “Anyone who is not against us is for us” (Mark 9:40). Pride leads to insecurity and the desire to outshine others. Saint James condemns the sort of independence by which we consider ourselves the masters of our fate. It is sinful to think that all your plans and actions depend on you instead of God. “Everyone who knows what is the right thing to do, and does not do it sins” (James 4:17). There is a need for human effort—but it is useless without divine assistance.

10 things to keep in mind:

  • Begin each day in prayer

  • Submit your plans to the Lord and He will perfect it.

  • The greatest gift you have is your soul— you cannot put a prize on the value of your soul, your life or the days you still have to live.

  • Set your priorities right —your identity is worth more than your possessions and your family is worth more than your career accomplishments.

  • Look out for opportunities to collaborate with other people.

  • Assist those you see to be in need—they are the ones who will assist you tomorrow.

  • Let what you are doing be in line with your faith —if it contravenes it, desist from it (it is a path of destruction).

  • You are called to a higher life (a life of grace) not just a life of fame and making money.

  • After all is said and done, the impact you would have left on the world is your good deeds (not fame, money or properties).

  • Remember the four last things —death, judgment, heaven and hell.

Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honour. Proverbs 29:23.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and report to the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Lord, grant me wisdom to know that my life on earth is just a vapour and set my eyes on heaven.

  2. Give me humility to seek you in everything I do and find you at last in heaven. Amen.

  3. Lord, honour Your word in my life. Never let me stray from your grace by my carelessness or lack of insight. Help me to see your plan for my life and walk in it daily. Amen.
