UNIQUENESS, HARD-HEARTEDNESS AND RELIABILITY OF GOD

Today’s Reading:

Psalm 115 (3, 16)

“But our God is in the heavens; he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.… The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men. (vv. 3, 16 AKJV)

“Father, You are in heaven, and You are doing whatever You wish to do in heaven and on this earth. Slow us down, and remind us that while You are at work, we are also engaged in the fulfilment of Your plan. Not one of us is designed to be passive, uninvolved, indifferent, or complacent. Stir us up within, Father, as we realise that time is short, and our days are full of emptiness, chaos, heartache, discouragement, and depression. Speak today because of Your grace, Lord, for we are Your servants and we will listen, in the name of the Saviour we pray. Amen.” (Prayer based on verse 3 by Charles R. Swindoll)

The Uniqueness of God.

Psalm 115 shows that God is alive and that every moment He is thinking about us, and caring for us, so, the onus is on us to put Him first in our lives and in whatever we do. “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name goes all the glory for Your unfailing love and faithfulness.” (v. 1). The Psalmist requested that God’s name alone, not of man, nor the nation of Israel should be glorified. A story was told of a woman whose husband had drowned after jumping out of his boat in an attempt to save another person’s life. She was said to be walking along the shoreline, spending time alone with her thoughts, when someone who had been on the boat ran down the pier, across the shore and called out to her, “Your husband is gone! He is gone!”. That was the moment she found out that her husband was dead. Her immediate response was Psalm 115 verse 3 – Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.” This response was not from a frivolous passivity; but from a deep sense of peace that God’s way is best, even when it hurts, and we do not understand why. Our God is alive and rules the earth from His throne room above. When we try to recite this verse off heart, it gives solace to our pains. It can save us from long-standing discouragement, and bitterness. It can also change our views on life’s emergencies, heartaches, disappointments, and losses.

Hardheartedness and Wickedness of Man.

At the time the psalm was written, many people had turned to worship dead gods of their own making, fashioned after the image of the fallen creatures (Isa. 44:9-20; 46:5-7; Jer. 10:3-16; Rom. 1:21-25) They took pride and delight in what they could see and had contempt for things of God that they could not see. Up till today, Christians still value tangible objects like home, clothing, and possessions, to intangible realities for spiritual growth, genuine salvation, the work of charity, or spending time with loved ones. Many like Adam and Eve, are spiritually eating the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden (Gen. 3:7a). Whereas, God’s initial intention was to give man the ability to acquire knowledge so that they would gain wisdom. He intended that important experiences would open their eyes and allow them to learn more about how to maintain and cultivate the earth. But alas! Their experiences of disobedience had opened their eyes to the possibility of evil. Also, after the flood in Noah’s days (Gen. 6-9); and when God confused the language and scattered the builders of the Tower of Babel, (Gen. 11:1-9); He renewed His covenant relationship through Abraham and his descendants (Gen. 17:6-13). All that God wanted is a cordial relationship with man, so that man may enjoy His blessings and live well, and for Him. We are created for His glory. But generations after generations, man seeks to exalt and unify themselves against the will of God. This dangerous move keeps man away from God because it gives man false independence and arrogance which sets him back into gross darkness, confusion, wickedness, and will eventually lead to destruction. We cannot hold things of God in one hand and use the other to hold fetish and occultic things. We cannot serve God and Mammon. This is gross darkness and confusion in the Christendom. We have the laws of God to guide our path and actions.

In his final exhortation to the people, Moses charged them to take the words of the Lord to heart, and to see to it that their children obeyed the Law of God (Deut. 32:44-46). In the case of Joshua, he made the people understand that the choice to be made is of God’s promise with the land, was not unconditional. He expressly warned them that if they do not obey, ‘the Lord’s anger will burn against you and you will quickly perish from the good land he has provided you’ (Jos 23:16) And that the most important condition to enjoy the good of the land was to continue to obey and worship the Lord. The people were free to choose of the several gods there were (24:14). He called on them to make their choice because the God of Israel is jealous, a consuming fire, who will not share his worship, His glory with another. But what do we see today, gross darkness and confusion everywhere in Christendom. People go about their way and do their own thing spiritually and physically. Forgetting that we are not here on our own. We are accountable to God the Maker of heaven and earth (Ps. 24; Jer. 10:11-12). Joshua said that as for him and his household, he is for the Lord God of Israel. As you are reading this too; the Lord wants you to make your choice now! As for me and my household, by the power of the Holy Spirit, I choose to serve the Lord of Heaven's Armies.

God is looking for who to stand in the gap in serious, genuine intercessory prayer for His people. He is conscripting those who believed, are baptised and are saved into the soldiers of Christ. For you to join the soldiers of Christ, you need to:

  • Confess your sins and surrender your life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

  • Be filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8)

  • Be a student of the Bible (Jos. 1:8)

  • Be willing to take up your cross daily, and follow Christ

  • Daily put on the whole armour of Christ (Eph. 6:10-18)

  • Be filled with the love of Christ and put on charity as a garment (the Holy Spirit will help you)

  • Intercede for lost souls, nations, cities, the body of Christ, families and so on.

  • The Lord will train, guide, and lead you in the spiritual battle.

  • The one that has called you will support you and see you through.
