Today’s Reading:
Ps. 31: 9-16
Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbours and an object of dread to my closest friends- those who see me on the street flee from me. I am forgotten as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. For I hear many whisperings, “Terror on every side!” They conspire against me and plot to take my life. But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me. Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love. (vv. 9-16)
Every day of human is accompanied by varying challenges and sometimes difficulties that are devastating and detrimental to our health – both physically and spiritually, and even our life fulfilment. Distress and chronic enmity come along with the day, posing serious challenges, difficulties, and problems capable of causing one to quit. As a result, human strength grows weak; intellectual capabilities fail; professional attainment or status becomes almost practically impossible; and life seems to become useless as a result of experiencing the bad side of life; but the hope of the believers is their trust in the Lord who owns and knows all things.
This is the case of the Psalmist in this text. The psalmist staged a complaint portraying his distressful state that his strength can no longer bear. He is full of anguish which digs deep into his physical body and inflicts his soul. He weeps all day and night, leaving his eyes weak, due to sorrow; his body and soul were grieved; his life, consumed in anguish; his strength fails as a result of affliction, and his bones continually grow weak. All of these came upon the psalmist as a result of the activities of his enemies, which equally made him become a reproach to both family and friends and even neighbours. But when he could no longer bear the load of the evil burden, he cried out to the Lord for mercy (vs9) and confessed her trust in the Lord for deliverance; believing that his life is in God’s hands- knowing fully well that only God can save.
Are you in a similar situation? Are you experiencing persecutions in your life, home, family, and workplace or in your neighbourhood or community? Have you become so weak and experiencing strength failure that the only option for you is to quit? Do you wake up each day to sadness and sorrow, and thought that the day never dawn? You can trust God with your life for your deliverance. You do not have to quit; you do not need to run without direction or seek help where you cannot find, but the only experience compounded problems. Run to Jesus – looking up to Him in trust, for He is the author and finisher of your faith (Heb. 12: 2).
Trust God and entrust your life into His saving alms – cast your burdens on Him, for He cares (1 Pet. 5: 7); He will take care of you… just be still and know that He is God (Ps. 46:10); with Him your deliverance is assured. Develop a lasting faith in Him believing that your life and situations are in His hands (vs15). Call on Him, He will always come to your aid – for He is our ever-present help in trouble (Ps. 46:1).
