Today’s Reading:

Mark 10:17-22

“Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven…” (v. 21)

Treasures are referred to as riches, things of great value, wealth stored up. Humans are quite familiar with treasures that are physical and acquired from on earth. However, there are treasures which are spiritual and found in heaven. The Scripture enlightens us that the treasures in heaven refer to the eternal blessings and rewards which are stored up in heaven for believers, which will last eternally. In Matt. 6:19-20, Jesus told his disciples and followers not to lay up for themselves treasures on earth, but rather, in heaven. He then gave an insight into the fact that where one’s treasure is, there the heart will also be.

This leads us to the question –

What are the characteristics of the treasures in heaven? These include: everlasting in nature; imperishable (lasting for ever, cannot decay); do not fade (dishonor); do not rust; cannot be destroyed; not subject to being stolen (Matt. 6:19); far more valuable than earthly treasures (very precious); make one rejoice (over gladdening); worth acquiring through selling earthly possessions; so valuable that one’s heart is on them in heaven. Although humans trust in their earthly treasures, those are the exact opposites of the heavenly treasures in characteristics.

What are these Treasures in heaven like?

These Treasures in heaven are said to be blessings and rewards, which include: crowns, listed as: imperishable crown (2 Cor. 9:24-25); crown of rejoicing (1 Thess. 2:19); crown of righteousness (2 Tim 4:18); crown of glory (I Pet 5:4); crown of life (Rev. 2:10).

In Today’s reading, Jesus encouraged his disciples and followers in general to have treasures in heaven (v. 21).

What are the conditions for having treasures in heaven?

It is said that the treasures are stored up, laid up, reserved in heaven. This connotes that actions or activities are required to get the treasures.

  • The first step is to be related to the heaven where the treasures will be stored up. It is where God lives and reigns over the earth and where Jesus, His Son, has returned, after He came down to earth to reconcile man to God after the fall in Eden (Gen. 3). One needs to accept that sacrifice which Jesus made, accept him as Lord and Saviour, and this qualifies one as part of that family in heaven. A place is, therefore, reserved for one, where the treasures can be laid up.

  • Next, one has to be focused on eternity by prioritising spiritual things over earthly possessions, living while still on earth, with an eternal perspective. One, therefore, has to focus on spiritual values and be involved in actions that bring rewards as listed.

  • In Today’s reading in v21, Jesus opens our eyes to one of the important actions that can fetch one a treasure in heaven. The man in the passage asked Jesus about inheriting eternal life. He told Jesus that he had kept all the commandments from his youth, so Jesus told him to go sell whatever he had and give to the poor. Therefore, being mindful, giving to the poor and giving alms in general, is an action which results in having treasures in heaven.

  • This is closely followed by the act of showing compassion and kindness to others; giving generously to help others, and giving support for the work of God.

  • Other actions include: living for God’s glory which include: suffering and enduring persecution for Christ’s sake (Matt. 5:12); faithfulness and obedience to God and Christ; eagerly awaiting the return of Christ as He promised, by continuing in good works, loving God and others; rejoicing always in the Lord for his wonderful blessings showered on humanity (Phil 4:4; Matt 5:12).

As believers, we need to lay up treasures in heaven, so that our joy and fulfilment will be complete in heaven.
