Acts 9:31-42

Psalm 116:12-17

John 6:60-69

“Day by day, dear Lord. For these three things I pray: to see you (more) clearly, love you more dearly and follow you closely ...”

This was a song I learnt in music class in my first year of secondary school. For some strange reason, it stuck. Probably because I already knew and accepted the purpose for which God made me: to know Him, love Him, serve Him, in this world and to be happy with Him forever in the next. And I also knew it is possible to fall out of relationship with God, stray from the path of salvation, chase after the world (the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life) and lose my soul (Mark 8:36, 1 John 2:16). But no matter what happens, the safest place to be is still at God’s side, listening to Christ and trusting Him just like Saint Peter: ‘Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life, and we believe; we know that you are the Holy One of God’ (John 6:69).

Here are some facts about a relationship with God that will help you grow:

  • It is God who calls you, and He invites everyone.

  • God will not impose His love on you—you have a choice to either accept or reject Him.

  • God will not change the truth to suit you.

  • God wants the best for you (Jeremiah 29:11).

  • God’s love comes at a cost —it cost His only Son, and it will demand a sacrifice from you.

  • Set your priorities right—do you want God in your life or not?

  • Prayer and frequenting the sacraments are a huge sign of predestination.

  • Let God into every aspect of your life and keep nothing from Him.

  • · Your past does not define you. It did not define Saint Peter; he went on to do the same kind of miracles which Jesus did. God can use you, too, if you learn from your past.

  • To be friends with God is to risk being alienated from the world and its ways.

  • Flee from time-wasters (persons, places and things).

  • Struggles with sin are a sign that you know the truth, and it is important to you.

  • You need courage to admit your weakness and to step away from all that is sinful.

  • You cannot grow in God if you keep company with His enemies. You cannot succumb to evil if you keep company with God’s friends.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Eternal Father, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life.

  2. Thank you for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ.

  3. Help me to offer myself over and over again to You each day, as a holy, living and pleasing sacrifice of praise. Amen.

  4. Lord Jesus, sometimes I find Your teachings difficult. But I accept you as the truth.

  5. Feed me with Your word and with Your Body and Blood, defend me from the onslaught of evil and help me to offer myself as a living sacrifice for the good of others today. Amen.
