THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK

Today’s Readings:

1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Psalm 119:97-102; Mark 6:17-29

Let us start this new working week on a note of a little wisdom: THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK. Psalm 37:30 says that, “The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.”

A wise person speaks less. The fewer your words, the fewer your mistakes. The more verbose you are, the greater your likelihood of exaggerating. You cannot help what others say or do. But you can stop your tongue from becoming the reason for someone’s misfortune. Herod’s lust at a dancing little girl and hasty promise cost the Baptist his life. Many young people today are slaves to scantily clad twirlers on social media. Do not suffer the fate of Herod. Do not make promises you know you cannot keep.

Remember, the power of life and death proceeds from the tongue (Proverbs 18:21).

This week, THINK before you speak:

T – Is it True?

H – Is it Helpful?

I – Is it Inspiring?

N – Is it Necessary?

K – Is it Kind?

A wise person speaks the truth. Their words are helpful not hurtful. They inspire, not demoralize. They do not throw unnecessary words around. Above all, a wise person’s words are kind. Are you kind with your words especially when you are angry? At the end of each day, carry out an examination of conscience. Be sorry for the hurtful words you said and be thankful for the kind and consoling words you said.

Here are five scripture verses to keep in mind this week:

  • James 1:26 – If anyone considers himself religious and does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

  • Proverbs 15:2 – The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes evil.

  • 1 Peter 3:10 – For whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue away from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.

  • *James 3:6 – The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire and itself set on fire by hell.

  • Matthew 12:36 – But I tell you that people will have to give account on the day of judgement for every careless word they have spoken.

Prayer:

  1. May the name of the Lord be praised for giving you another day. May God preserve you from the evil of an uncontrolled tongue. May the wisdom and power of the Spirit be evident in the words you speak. May God speak through you and silence your foes. And speak for you in your absence. May favour and blessings flow into your life always. Amen.
