Today’s Reading:

Jeremiah 25:8‭-‬12

“Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Because ye have not heard my words, behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the LORD, and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations. Moreover, I will take from them the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the candle. And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.” (Jeremiah 25:8‭-‬12 KJV‬)‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

In the above scripture, God said He will send the northern kingdom, Israel, into captivity for not obeying His word. When the children of God go astray, and refuse to obey His word, He allows them to suffer affliction in the hands of their enemies. The ultimate purpose is for them to take correction.

Sometimes when you are passing through afflictions, you need to check your obedience level. Ecclesiastes 10 vs 8 says that whosoever breaks the hedge, a serpent will bite. The children of Israel had consistently been disobedient to the word of God. They had gone into idolatry through king Jeroboam. This continued until they were led into captivity in Babylon. The scripture also says that the nation (Babylon) that afflicted Israel, God also judged.

The danger in this for a Christian is that you do not allow yourself to be used to afflict another child of God. God will also judge you. If you are fond of joining others to criticise or judge servants of God in the public space like social media, be ready to receive your own divine judgement.
