THE PRAYER OF A DISCIPLE

Today’s Reading:

Colosians1:9-15

"That's my daughter in the Lord, He is my son in the Lord and others" are some of the popular adjectives commonly used among the Christian folks in our contemporary world. Many B.S.F and other campus fellowship leaders often refer to some of their intimate fellowship members as Sons and daughters in the Lord. As good and nice as that sounds, many don't know what exactly it takes to be Father or Mother someone in the Lord.

Unlike us who enjoy the title of a "Father in the Lord", apostle Paul understood what it takes to Father fellow believers in the Lord. His letter to the Colossians as well as to other Gentile Churches depicts to us how he fervently and unseasonably laboured in the place of prayer for those churches.

Paul prayed continually for the believers to:

  1. Be able to possess the knowledge of God's will.

  2. Be strengthened with power

  3. Be able to endure and have patience

  4. Be able to joyfully thank God.

  • This implies that believers cannot grow and become who God wants them to be until they are able to discern the knowledge of God's will for their lives through spiritual wisdom and understanding. Hence as a Discipler and spiritual leader, you are saddled with the responsibility of guiding your subjects into discerning, discovering and fulfilment of God's purpose for their lives.

  • The activities between the Discipler and the disciple(s) should be that which will lead to empowerment. Today People involved in the mentor-mentee relationship are involved in degrading and disgracing activities. You must not be found guilty of this.

  • Endurance and patience are key virtues to reigning with the Lord Jesus Christ at the end of our Christian race. Both the Discipler and his/her disciples must be possessing and practice this so as for them to behold Jesus on the last day.

  • God should be worshipped in spirit and in truth. Psalm 100 admonishes us to thank and appreciate God. Hence, worship of God begins with appreciating Him for who He is and what He has graciously done for us and through us. (Vs.12-15).

Every Discipler must note that they are to mould people after Christ and not after themselves, they are to follow Paul's example as seen in today's passage as he prayed and joined God at work in their lives.
