THE LORD’S COMMANDMENT

Today’s Reading:

Psalm 119: 129-136

1Kings 2: 1-4

Mathew 12: 8-42

A COMMANDMENT is a directive, an order that must be obeyed to prevent dire consequences. If you believe GOD has directed you to do something, it is a commandment. A commandment is divinely ordered. It is the act or power of commanding. It is a precept, edict, order or rule. The first set of commandments was given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai. They were ten in number. This was to be followed by a series of commandments in the Pentateuch such that at the end of it all they amounted to 613.

However, Jesus came and wrapped all the commandments into two broad categories. 1. Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is to love thy neighbour as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Mark 12: 30-31. Following God’s commandment is the antidote to a successful life. The psalmist therefore confessed that the entrance of God’s word gives light; and gives understanding to the simple. He opened his mouth, panted and longed for God’s commandment. Psalm 119: 130-131. Obedience to GOD’s commandment is the secret to living a successful life. When we follow his commandments, he will open up unto us and show us secrets that we need to navigate the paths of life. The Bible says we should have respect unto the covenant for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitation of cruelty. Psalm 74:20-21.

God gave Saul a commandment to wipe out the Amalekites but he disobeyed and spared Agag and God cut off his lineage from becoming kings. Rehoboam rebelled against God by listening to his peers and the kingdom was wrestled from him. Search yourself today from your deepest inner recess and you will discover where you are disobeying God. Come to genuine repentance like the prodigal son and the Lord will forgive you and direct your paths into your ordained divine destiny in the mighty name of Jesus.
