Today’s Reading:
Psalm 19:7-11
“The law of the Lord is perfect (flawless), restoring and refreshing the soul; the status of the Lord is reliable and trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right bringing joy to the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear is the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the Judgements of the Lord are true, they are righteous altogether. They are more desirable than gold, yes than much fine gold; Sweeter also than the honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them, Your servant is warned [reminded, illuminated, and instructed. In keeping them there is great reward.” (Psalm 19:7-11 AMPV)
In Psalm 19 which is our reading today, the Psalmist, King David saw God through the beauty of His creation. Just as a master artist is known by his work the Heavens reveal the glory of the Lord. The Hebrew word kabod literarily means ‘heavy,’ having the connotation of weightiness. God’s glory is His signature demarcating ownership of the world (Ps. 24:1), His revelation of Himself to His creation, the physical manifestation of His divine presence, and the external form of His majesty, pre-eminence, and His dignity. We all can observe all the channels of His revelation. And by this, we cannot but glaringly see the awesomeness of this Creator God, who by His very presence has cut a difference and wields an incomparable influence of one who ultimately determines events, controls and decides on everything about our world. Also, the beauty of creation should, in essence, lead all creation to the worship of the Creator and not worship of that which is created (Rom 1:20). Glory is that important ingredient and characteristic of God which we all acknowledge and to which we all must respond with confession, worship and praise. “There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth. And their words to the end of the world.” (v. 3).
Further down in verse 7, it talks about the law, the precept, the testimony, the statutes, the commandment of the Lord which provides genuine wisdom, which teaches us how to live a life pleasing unto God (Deut. 29:14-29), which converts our soul, which makes us humble, which enlightens our eyes, and overall it gives the fear of the Lord. A simple person is one with an open mind to the truth of God (v. 7). Reverent fear is the result of an obedient attitude (v. 9). We can compare verses 7 to 14 to Psalm 119 which praises the majesty of the Word of God and John 1:1-5 which confirms that the Word of God is Jesus which lightens every life that comes into the world.
What do we do with the Word of God:
We hold it in high esteem, we reverent it.
We daily read it, study, meditate on it and memorise the promises of God as defensive and offensive (Jos 1:8). Then it will make our way prosperous and we will succeed in whatever we do. then this prosperity is not automatic. There are rules and regulations to follow and we must practise what we read.
We incorporate its teachings into our everyday life as the basis of true success in life
We teach our children from childhood so that when they grow up they will not depart from it.
Before we can benefit from the word, we must know the God we serve. We need to give our lives to the lordship of our Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour and master.
When we have done all, we are promised eternal life with the Saviour in his presence forever and ever.
