Today’s reading:

Revelation 12:1-12

“Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, … for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God …. has been cast down.” (v.10)

An “Accuser” is someone who claims that another person has done something wrong morally or illegally, or something unkind, and he is the person making the accusation. It is common knowledge that the devil, Satan, brings false charges and accusations against people, especially Christians. He is, therefore, known generally as the “deceiver”, “adversary”, and “accuser” (Rev.12:10). The main aim of the “Accuser” is to bring discouragement to people, weakening their resolve or hold on something, especially the truth, by taunting them so that they go back or abandon their rightful cause or identity.

In the Old Testament, in Job 1:6, Satan is said to have presented himself, along with the sons of God, before the Lord. Of course, he came as an accuser as he was well known. He even told the Lord that it was not because of Job’s blamelessness, uprightness, fear of God and shunning evil, that God found none like him on the earth, but that it was because God had made a hedge around him, his household and all that he had. Satan is a “spoilt-pot”. In v11, he asked God to stretch out his hand and touch all that Job had and that he would surely curse God to his face. Thank God that the devil was well known to him and his tactics – the old Lucifer. He was thrown down from heaven to the earth because of his rebellion in heaven (Ez. 28:12-18; Is 14:12-15; Rev. 12:7-9).

Joshua, the high priest in Israel, was also a victim of Satan, who stood at his right hand before the Angel of the Lord, to oppose him, because of his filthy garment (Zech. 3:1,3). In the New Testament books, Jesus can be said to be the greatest victim of the accusers – the Jews, especially those of the Pharisees sect, and Satan himself. Many believers in the first-century church, apart from the Apostles, suffered from many accusers, including Satan, mainly because of their faith in Christ. Believers today are facing the unbelieving accusers and Satan himself daily. Just like the woman in Jesus’ time, recorded in Jn. 8 v. 10-11, who was accused of adultery and subsequently delivered from the accusers by Jesus, believers today have an ultimate victory over Satan, the chief of all accusers.

In the revelation given to Apostle John of things which must shortly take place, it is recorded in Rev. 12 v 10 of our Today’s reading that he heard a loud voice saying in heaven that the accuser of the brethren who accused them before God day and night, had been cast down. This is the ultimate lot of Satan. However, there is a need to be able to overcome the accusers as we go along on the Christian journey, and also before the ultimate doom for Satan. It is instructive to learn from the experiences of Jesus and the first-century believers. Jesus prevailed over or overcame his accusers at different times through: quotations of the word; silence (quietness, non-response); asking questions; telling parables; saying words of condemnation or affirmation (where appropriate). Some of these facts or methods were also used by the first-century believers, especially the Apostles. We too can borrow from theirs and Jesus’ experiences. The experience in the revelation given to John was that the brethren in heaven overcame Satan by the blood of the Lamb (Jesus Christ) and by the word of their testimony, and they did not give their lives to death.

Believers can now overcome their accusers, especially Satan, by pleading the blood of Jesus, speaking and emphasising their testimonies of victories in their Christian walks, and being committed to the things of God and Christ.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer out loud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome into the body of Christ. Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Eternal God, thank you for the gift of your Son who reconciled us with you.

  2. Precious Lord, we appreciate your victory over Satan the accuser, and which victory you gave us for free.

  3. Lord, help us to appropriate the methods and weapons you have given us to overcome Satan, now and in eternity.

  4. Father, open the eyes of church leaders to teach believers the methods of victory over Satan.

  5. Father, deliver the nation’s leaders from the hands and tactics of Satan the accuser, so that they can have victory.
