Today’s Reading:
Gen. 2:15, 17; 3:1-7 (3:5-6)
“For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.”
(Gen. 3:5-6)
Temptation is Satan’s invitation to win Christians over to his kingdom and disobey God’s instructions. Satan tempted Eve and succeeded in getting her to sin and doubt God’s goodness by presenting to her something fake that seemed extremely attractive. He lied that God was strict, stingy, and selfish for not wanting Adam and Eve to share His knowledge of good and evil. He made Eve to forget all that God had given her and focus on one thing she could not have.
Satan made sin look extremely attractive to Eve. “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate” Gen. 3:6. He stirred to make Eve think that sin is good, pleasant and desirable. People usually choose wrong things because they are convinced that those things are good, at least for themselves. Our sins do not always appear ugly to us, and the pleasant looking sins are always the hardest to avoid. So, prepare yourselves for the attractive temptations, there is always a way of escape (I Cor. 13:10). Use God’s word to help you stand against it. Satan tempted Jesus (Matt. 4:11), but Jesus did not sin.
Note the following from Jesus’ examples.
1. We must realize that being tempted is not sinful, yielding to it is.
2. Run away from whatever that can lead to you to sin. Follow Paul’s advice to run from those things that produce evil thoughts (2 Tim. 2:22)
3. Say ‘NO” when you are confronted with what is wrong. James 1:12.
4. Mind where you go and the friends you keep.
