STOP DOUBTING, AND BELIEVE

Today’s Reading:

John 20:24-29

…then He said to Thomas, put your finger here; see my hands, reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe” (v. 27)

The scenario in our text is one of the incidents that authenticate and establish the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The same body that went to the grave came back to tell the whole world that He arose. Normally, if someone had an injury and there is a scar on the body, if the person died, he is supposed to have another body (I Corinthians 15: 53-54). All the scars of the old body would have been swallowed and disappeared. But in the case of Jesus, he came back with the same body just to allay fear and dispel doubt. Unlike some of the African myths or traditions, when some people died, they appear to people, but there is no concrete evidence to substantiate such a claim in most cases. Possibly, Thomas was coming from that background, the other disciples told him they have seen the Lord, but he doubted.

Is doubting a sin? This question is one of the issues scholars have debated over the years. Even when some people share testimonies, I have heard them saying, they never believed God could do it even after praying and fasting. It’s obvious that at one point or the other in our Christian journey we doubt. How do we handle it?

Doubt is like a middle point between faith and unbelief. A child of God may slightly shift to the side of doubt, but he must move away and hold on to faith once he realises this. Jesus had to come back because if Thomas were left that way without answering his question, it would have been disastrous even for Christians of today. Jesus said he should quit doubting and believe. Jesus’ solution to the problem of doubt is belief. When you do not see and yet believe, you are blessed. Exercise your faith no matter what you are passing through and do not doubt the power of God rather believe.

JAMES ALADE

Prayer:

  1. Father, at every point that doubt creeps into my life, may my heart be aglow to allow faith in, in Jesus name.

  2. Father may doubt not take hold of my life, in Jesus name.

  3. Oh Lord, I believe, help me to believe the more, in Jesus name.

  4. Father, unit the body of Christ in your love, in Jesus name.

  5. Father, that peace may reign in our nation, and Your plan and purpose be fulfilled to the glory of Your name, in Jesus name.
