Return to Me

Today’s Reading:

Jeremiah 3:21-4:2

“Return, all of you who have turned away from the LORD; he will heal you and make you

faithful”. ( Jeremiah 3:22, GNB)

Sometimes people think they can always live their lives without God. However, they have forgotten the saying that “for every action there is always a counter reaction.” Whoever, decides to live his life outside of God must be ready to face the consequence of such action. That was exactly the case of the children of Israel in our text. Their lives were characterized with idol worship, disobedience to God’s word and unfaithfulness in their relationship with Him. They were living for self and not for God. According to verse 21, a voice was heard upon the high places calling the guilty Israel to repentance. The same high places which had been the scene of the guilt now echoed with weeping and supplication as they called to mind the hateful sins of the past and its attendant consequences.

They have perverted their ways and the reason was that they have forgotten their God or have been guilty of inward alienation and departure from Him-a true picture of backsliding. They came justifying God in their troubles and judging themselves for their sins. They called sin death and ruin and charged upon it all they suffered. However, they finally acknowledged that surely in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel, not the idols they worshiped. The loving father who will not cast out those who are ready and willing to return to Him responded to their cry.

God responded instantly like the father in the parable of the prodigal son, who ran when he saw the repentant boy afar off, embraced and kissed him. Similarly, the love of God in this passage also points to the great salvation from sin which Jesus wrought for us. God’s loving arm is stretched forth, whoever comes to Him, He will in no wise cast out. When you return to Him, He will heal your backslidden, offers pardon for sin and rest from troubles. What a great love! So amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.
