Why did Lot’s wife turn into a pillar of salt? Because she looked back, right? Why did she look back? It is not a simple question. There are a number of possible reasons. Probably because they left Sodom in haste, she forgot some of her valuables; she was hoping there was a chance they could go back to get them, so she looked back. She might have been distracted by the noise and the rumbling behind her, and she panicked and looked back. She most certainly turned back because she had not trained herself in obedience. She was given a specific instruction: ‘Run for your life. Neither look behind you nor stop anywhere on the plain. Make for the hills if you would not be overwhelmed.’ How hard could this be?

If you have not trained yourself to listen to the one who is guiding you, you are definitely going to make costly mistakes when it matters the most. The disciples in the Gospel battled a headwind, with waves crashing into their boat. If they had not remembered that Jesus is in charge, they would have possibly drowned. Jesus was in the boat with them, but they resorted to their skills. But when they remembered, they turned to Him: ‘Save us, Lord, we are going down!’ (Matthew 8:5). And Jesus rebuked the storm. Their obedience and submission to Christ saved them. Know who is in charge and listen to Him. You cannot listen to the voice of God if you have not trained yourself to do so. Some people joke that they will wait until the last moment of their life to confess their sins and then die. This will not work because you have not trained yourself to listen to God’s word, so when it is imminent, you will not know it. People leave this world daily. Among them are those who live their lives one day at a time. Others think they have time and waste what they have. Don’t gamble with your life. Remember Lot’s wife.

In your journey with Christ, do not look back. Don’t allow distractions to steal your gaze from the Master. What are some of the distractions that are common today? LLP (the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, 1 John 2:16).

  • Lust of the flesh – Sexual sins (porn addiction, drug addiction, masturbation, fornication and adultery, homosexuality and abortion and so on)

  • Lust of the eyes – Envy, objectification and exploitation, desiring the forbidden, social media comparison, desiring things that are sexually suggestive, violent, or otherwise morally questionable, simply because they are visually appealing,

  • Pride of life – Boasting about one’s accomplishment without reference to God, desiring to be admired and esteemed by others, believing oneself to be better than others, excessive focus on material possession, love of luxury and comfort, desire for power and control, pursuit of worldly pleasures, rejection of counsel or guidance, feeling spiritually superior, disregarding God’s will and so on.

May God deliver us from the traps of the enemy and the traps we set for ourselves out of selfishness. Once your mind is fixed on God, allow nothing and no one to distract you.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud.  “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Eternal Father, keep my eyes fixed on you and on doing what pleases you and makes me more like you. Help me to assist others and allow myself to be guided by those you have placed in my path for my good and well-being. Bless me today and always. Amen.

  2. Eternal Father, grant us the grace to obey You in every circumstance and wisdom to know what is right and do it. May our walk with you lead us away from evil and harm and bring us safely to your blessings and bounty. Amen.
