Today’s Reading:

Exodus 23: 10-13

“six days you will do your work and on the seventh day you will rest.”

(v. 12a)

Rest is a period when one is not engaging in any work or activity. It is meant for relaxation, sleeping or total abstinence from an activity. When man rests, the body is refreshed and gets new strength for the next assignment.

It is a pity that most people do not want to rest today. Some belief that the more they work the more money or profit they get. As much as it is good and beneficial to work as the scriptures commanded it, also when one is working without resting, such an individual will be laid to rest untimely.

The command to rest was first practiced by God (Genesis 2:2). If anyone fails to rest such person is not obeying the will of God. When rest is observed based on the passage, the land will yield more increase in the following year. The poor also will benefit greatly. Animals of the field will rest; ox and donkey used to plough will be refreshed and energized to do more. Sons of the handmaid and foreigners will also be replenished and reinvigorated. The command assumes that the farmer will store up enough on the sixth year to carry him over to the seventh, thus teaching a ‘saving culture’ in Israel. However, it also assumes that the farmer would stagger his seventh-year planting with different fields.

God has the interest of all His creatures at heart by commanding us to rest. In our contemporary days, the day of rest is Sunday. We are expected to also worship God.
