PERFECT PEACE FROM GOD

Today’s Reading:

Job 22:21-30

“Now yield and submit yourself to Him [agree with God and be conformed to His will] and be at peace; in this way, [you will prosper and great] good will come to you.” (v. 21 AMPV)

There is a nugget of truth in Eliphaz, discussion of accusations against Job, although he brutally and bluntly made some incorrect assumptions about Job’s plight contrary to anything Job had ever done or stood for (vv. 4-11). He instantly pronounces judgement on Job as being guilty and that he needs repentance (vv. 20-30). Eliphaz knew some wisdom truth which he practically misapplied. Tracing Job’s suffering to his sin. Job’s friends had a partial knowledge of God’s truth and character, but they could not accurately apply it to the truth of life. Eliphaz gave a good summary of repentance, by saying that we must ask God for forgiveness when we sin, but it was a wrong conclusion in the case of Job who had already asked God for forgiveness (7:20-21; 9:20; 13:23), and he had lived closely with God all the way. They concluded that Job is not just a sinner who rebelled against God, but was the epitome of evil who wreaks havoc upon the most vulnerable human beings – the poor, the widows, and the orphans. In his beautiful discourse full of hope in our hopeless world, Eliphaz pleads with Job to confess his sin and experience God’s restoration. This is a fact but in the case of Job I wast like pouring pepper and salt in his wound.

It is very true that when we are at peace, good comes our way. Indeed, nothing is worth anything if we do not have peace of mind (v. 21). Eliphaz painted a picture of life of blessing in store when we repent from sin and turn back to God (v. 23). He is asking some good questions which we can also use to assess our lives. What do you think about God? Do you see Him as your Creator who has given you breath of life, the Giver of your life? Or do you view Him as the Almighty? Do you acknowledge that His power supersedes any other world power you have ever witnessed? Do you view Him as the One who will call all into judgement one day? What you think about God makes all the difference in how you see your life. Money is nothing where there is no peace. Fame is also nothing without peace. The most important prestigious job in the whole of a corporate company is nothing without peace. Many would struggle to climb up the ladder of success, and every time they go up a step, they lose their peace because of pressure from all angles. Because of pressure of work, they are not able to be with their family they love dearly. Their life is consumed with the stress of trying to play the games necessary to keep their job. Where they have a big executive position in a big company, they are all the time worrying about how to keep the position and job. And as a result, their health will start to fall apart; they have lost their peace of mind. A life without peace of God is full of confusion, and chaos, but when we have peace of God, there is contentment and good things will start to follow.

It is not that good jobs and nice things of life are bad, but in the process of looking for it we do not let it steal our peace. Jesus Christ in his discourse with His disciples said that, ‘My perfect peace I leave with you, not as the world gives. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid. Let my peace calm you in every situation and give you courage and strength for every challenge.’ (John 14:27 AMPV). Are you sure you have perfect peace in what you are doing or pursuing, or you are just doing it because it is the trend in the world? If not repent and retrace your steps to God, the giver of perfect peace.
