Today’s Readings:

Rev 14:14-19

Psalm 96:10-13

Luke 21:5-11

There is no good news today, at least not the kind you are expecting. Jesus predicts the destruction of the Jerusalem temple. ‘All these things you are staring at now – the time will come when not a single stone will be left on another: everything will be destroyed’ (Luke 21:5). And even though his disciples were more concerned about the “when” and “how” of this event, Jesus focuses on the lesson from it: Nothing in this world lasts; not even the noblest intentions and decisions will last. God wants us to lay our treasures and fix our gaze on eternity.

What are some of those things we squander our time and resources on?

  • Prestige;

  • Fame;

  • Pleasure: Eating and drinking and merriment;

  • Living for the moment.

These are the world’s indices for the good life. We are a “chop life” generation. We love enjoyment (“Who doesn't like beta tin?”). We want to put our feet up and live like there is no tomorrow. But there is tomorrow and it will call us to account for how we have spent today.

What does Jesus want you to think about today?

  • Build your relationship with God. You have a friend in Jesus. You have a real connection to God. You are always welcome in His presence. You are Christ’s disciple, called to follow in His footsteps as you journey to eternal life and peace. As His disciples, we live as He lived (for others) and in obedience to the Father’s will.

  • Accountability. You will render an account for your life, for the resources that have passed through your hands, for the gifts and talents with which God has blessed you, which you can use to shape our world for the better. You will render an account for all those you can help but choose not to help. You will render an account of how you spend every moment of your life.

  • Compassion. You need to remind yourself always that you are the first recipient of mercy. God has shown you mercy in sending you His only Son to die for your sins. Do not sabotage yourself. Your life and every moment of it is precious. Live it out in service to God and others. Think about how you can support others and spare something for the future. Don’t just “chop and quench”. Save something for the future.

  •  Live one day at a time. If you leave this world today, will you be justified in the choices and decisions you have made? Will God honour you for the choices you made? On the last day, will God say to you: “Welcome my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23)? Or will God say, “Go away from me with your curse upon your head to the place prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41)?

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Lord, grant the gift of wisdom to your children. Help them to seek after what is good and adds value to others and to flee from acts of selfishness, falsehood and greed. Help them to remember that this world shall pass away and eternity shall remain. Grant them grace to make the right decisions today following Your will through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  2. May God grant you true wisdom, enduring courage, rugged Faith, lively hope, steady trust and love that lasts forever. Amen.
