Today’s Reading:

Judges 6:6-10

“And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.” (v. 6 AKJV)

The Israelites were under the oppression of the Midianites for years and they were greatly discouraged because there was little or nothing, they could boast of vis-à-vis their yearly labours. They worked so hard only to become terrified at the point of harvest by their enemies. “And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.” (Judges 6:6). Life comes at all of us at different phases of life which often times make us think of giving up. Thus, the bright future once conceived started becoming blurry. The little hope that is left has been snuffed off by people you trusted. Where you think you would be encouraged, you met discouragement there. Now, it seems your world is fast collapsing you. Possibly you are currently at a low moment of your life and it looks as if you will not survive it, wait… you will.

The Scripture is a testament of men that were once discouraged despite the much that is spoken of their faith. Abraham’s hope got a blow when Isaac was not coming on time. David was once in your shoes. His city was raided but that was not enough, his servants wanted to stone him to death. He wrote in Psalm 43:5, “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again- my Savior and my God!” Joseph’s experience might not be different. When Jesus was very close to the point of death on the Cross, he was discouraged but Luke 22:43 says, And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.”

Despite their discouragements, they did not stay on it. Rather, they looked up to God is able to give strength to overcome. Are you discouraged? There is a hope for you. Our text reveals that the Israelites cried to God. David and Jesus did the same. When you feel discouraged, look up to the God from whom strength comes. God wants you to share your worries with him. That is why He is your father. More so, remember God’s promise sin his word concerning you. John wrote, “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” (1 John 4:4). Confess this and not your anxieties! God sent Gideon to encourage the Israelites. At this point of your life, do not hesitate to speak up with friends and authorities over you that will encourage and pray with you. You will need them to go through this moment.
