Minister of Enjoyment, hmm! Some days ago, some of my brothers mentioned a video that was making the rounds on social media, of a Catholic priest who was shown celebrating Mass and then the next minute, he was in a club (I later found out it was a wedding reception) and then on a boat cruise. And the song that was playing in the background was “Minister of Enjoyment”. These things themselves (celebrating Mass, partying and boat riding) do not make you either holy or sinful. There is still something that marks you as a disciple of Christ. It is the same thing which makes you think twice when you wish to make a decision or evaluate a course of action to determine if it is right or wrong, praiseworthy or morally reprehensible. This thing is the presence of the Holy Spirit. It is, in fact, not a thing; it is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God Himself, and He desires to make His home in you.

The Holy Spirit is the one who guides us so that we do not do things which offend our human dignity, or hurt our identity as lights in the world. It is the same Holy Spirit who causes us to give glory to God by all our actions. Remember how Peter described Jesus: "He went about doing good" (Acts 10:38).  Jesus actively engaged in performing kind and helpful actions, especially healing those oppressed by the devil, because God was with him. This is our responsibility as His disciples because He says: “Whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you,” because you love me and you love one another (John 15:17).

When your actions create unnecessary division and controversy, you are creating a problem, and that is not a hallmark of the Holy Spirit. People should know who you are and what you are capable of or incapable of. You have a huge capacity for goodness. Do not squander it on things which do not matter in the end. Yes, you are free to do what you want. But you will not be free from the consequences of your action, either in this life or in the world to come. Make your choices carefully. Repent quickly of your sins. Offend no one who sees you by your careless action, either in private or public (including social media). Invite the Holy Spirit to take away from you the false idea that freedom means negotiating with evil and compromising with sin.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Come, Holy Spirit, fill my heart with the pure light of your presence. Help me to make my choices carefully, to consider the good and well-being of my brothers and sisters, my eternal salvation and the salvation of those who will come to know you through me and let my every action give glory to You. Amen.

  2. Holy Spirit from above, fill my heart with your love. Drive from me the coldness of sin and distress, enflame my head with the embers of peace and progress. Amen.
