Today’s reading:

Revelation 19:1-8

“Let us be glad and give him glory, the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready.” (v. 7)

In the circular world, marriage is understood to be an act or contract by which a man and a woman become husband and wife. Scripturally, a Christian marriage is the union of a man and a woman, who freely enter into a covenant of love with each other in Christ. It is designed by God and instituted from the beginning when He said to Adam in Gen. 2:24 – “therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh”. Also quoted in Matt.19:5-6 and Eph. 5:31. “Marriage” is said to be a mystery! The wife is also called the bride, while the man is called the bridegroom and/or husband.

In Today’s reading in verse 7, it is written that the marriage of the Lamb has come and his wife has made herself ready. The questions here are: who is this Lamb? And who is his wife? It is pertinent to say that Apostle John, who is the author of the book of Revelation, was given visions (revelation/prophesy) of the future, which he was instructed to write down as shown by an angel of God (Rev. 1:1-3). With this background, it is easy to relate to the fact that many things said in the bible have antecedents, and are recorded in parts of the rest of the bible. The “Lamb” spoken of in our Today’s reading refers to Jesus, who, when John the Baptist saw coming towards him, just when He started his ministry on earth, identified him as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (1 John 1:29; 36). Also, in Rev. 5:12, Apostle John said he looked and heard voices of many angels around the throne saying with a loud voice “worthy is the Lamb who was slain….”. These scriptures indicate that Jesus was said to be the perfect and ultimate sacrifice for the sin of the world. Prophet Isaiah also identified Jesus as the Lamb who was led to the slaughter (Isaiah 53:7).

The next question is – who is the wife (bride) of the Lamb? “The church”, which is constituted by saints, is said to be the wife (bride) of the Lamb. Paul in Eph. 5:23-26 wrote that Christ Jesus is head of the church, and Saviour of the body, and that He loved the church and gave himself for her, and bought her with his blood. The saints constitute the church, the bride (Rev. 19:18), who was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright. In our Today’s reading in verse 7, it was shown to John that the marriage of the Lamb had come and his wife had made herself ready. Since this is futuristic, it is instructive to ask ourselves how the church, the wife/bride, should make herself ready? With the accomplishment of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and subsequent ascension to heaven, now seated at the right hand of God the Father, it is obvious that He has accomplished his role as the husband (bridegroom). It is now left for the bride/wife to make herself ready.

In Today’s reading in v. 8, mention is made of the righteous acts of the saints (the church).

  1. Righteousness is very important as part of the readiness. It is important to note that the saints are those who have accepted the sacrifice of the Lamb, Jesus, and have made him their Saviour and Lord. Gladly, the righteousness of God has already been imputed on all believers, through Jesus Christ (Rom. 3:22). However, the saints must continue to maintain the gifted righteousness. To achieve this and to be ready, therefore, the saints must continue to go through the process of sanctification and being led by the Holy Spirit who dwells in them. They will, therefore, continue to live Christ-like lives and wash their garments/clothes in the blood of the Lamb (Rev.7:9-17).

  2. Furthermore, the saints should learn the lesson from the parable of the ten virgins – the oil of their lamps must always be full and lamps burning high, never low (Matt 25:1-13).

  3. Every saint in the church must be prepared to be changed at the blowing of the trumpet (1Cor. 15:51-55), no slackness at all! The watch word shall be - BE PREPARED!

It is said in Today’s reading in v.9 that blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb. Would you be called? Get ready to be a partaker!

CHRISTIE KUPOLUYI

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Father in heaven, we thank you for the gift of your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who was slain from the foundation of the world.

  2. Precious Lord Jesus, thank you for accepting to be the Lamb without blemish, slain as sacrifice for our sins.

  3. Lord, please continue to wash us with your blood and prepare us as your saints, clothe with clean linens, as your bride/wife.

  4. Father, ginger up the church to occupy its place as the bride of the Lamb, the bridegroom, as you help remove all the uncleanliness from it.

  5. Father, let your revival envelope our nation, starting from the church, on to the leaders and all the people.
