Jesus is a football fan. So, one day, Jesus went to a football game, and people were surprised to see him. But he was so overcome by excitement that he didn’t notice. One of the teams scored, and he erupted in cheers and whoops, giving a high five to those closest to him. A few minutes into the game, the opposing team scores. Once again, Jesus threw both hands in the air, screaming, “What a great goal! What a great goal!!”

Most of the people around were confused, “Who is he supporting?” one person questioned. “Both teams, I suppose”, another responded. A few minutes later, the team that opened the scoring went ahead, making it 2-1. And once more, he chorused with the winning side. A supporter of the opposing team could no longer hold his patience, “Come, Master, who are you supporting? One minute you supported us, the next moment, you were cheering our opponents. Which wan u dey sef?” Jesus simply replied with a smile, “I am a football fan”. Saint Paul correctly notes that “God has no favourites”. He favours any and everyone He has created, especially those who acknowledge and live according to the law of love and mercy. God’s love is not zoned to people of a specific culture or faith. He is not swayed by wealth and prestige. Everyone who keeps His laws is acceptable to Him.

Here are some things that God’s favoured people are notable for:

  • They do not condemn others for their sins.

  • They are not hypocritical, pointing fingers while hiding their sins.

  • They are quick to repent every time they fall into sin.

  • They seek renown, honour and immortality by doing good.

  • They are truthful and modest.

  • They are clothed in virtue, and they steer clear of vices.

  • They take solace in prayer.

  • They treat others fairly and do all things from a place of true unselfish love.

  • They look to show honour and clothe others with respect and dignity, no matter their class or social standing.

  • They ease the burdens of others and use their positions of power and influence to make life better for others.

Jesus continually cheers and celebrates such persons because they are close to His heart. They are not the most colourful. They are not the most loved. Sometimes, they are even criticised and condemned. But this is what makes them special—they know that God notices their efforts, and it is His opinion that counts. This realisation made Saint Theresa of Avila conclude:  “If this is how You treat your friends, it is no wonder You have so few!” Are you ready to be God’s favoured child?

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest.

  1. Eternal Father, doing what pleases you comes with its demands. Strengthen me when things get tough and help me to carry on each day with grace and courage. Amen.
