Today’s Reading:
Matthew 1:18-25 (21)
"And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." (v.21 NIV)

Jesus Christ came to the world from God the Father. He could only be born into the world through the Holy Spirit conception of the virgin so that he could be both God and man, also to be able to make atonement for our sins.
Mary the mother of Jesus was espoused to her Joseph who was from the line of David. In those days, engagement was legally binding and will require a divorce to be broken. And the engagement could last for a period of up to a year. This is to ensure that the woman was not pregnant for another man. When Joseph discovered that Mary was pregnant, and being a righteous man, does not want to disgrace her. He wanted to secretly divorce her. But it took the intervention of a divine revelation to persuade Joseph to accept pregnant Mary as his wife and to name the child. Joseph had to accept the pregnancy in order that Jesus would come from the line of David.
An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a vision to warn him not to divorce Mary but take her as his wife. She would give birth to a Son and he would call his name Jesus because he would save his people from their sins. This happened to fulfill the prophecies of the prophets that a Son would be born to a virgin and his name would be called Emmanuel - God with us.
The circumstances under which Jesus came into this world teaches us to despise the vain honours of this world when compared with piety and holiness. The mystery of his becoming man is so that we adore him. He was to partake of our nature, yet he was pure and was not defiled by the original sin communicated to all Adam's race.
Jesus came to fill the yearning for rescue that fills our heart. His name and mission are the same - he came to save us from our sins.
We should therefore respond to his love with adoration of his name and gratitude for what he has done. And so, we must all continue to hail the power of Jesus name.
