Today’s Reading:
Jeremiah 9:12-26
“Thus says the Lord, ‘Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor the rich man in his riches… but in that he understands and knows Me.” (v 23-24)

It is common to see or hear someone take pleasure or pride in what he has made, or achieved or become in life. He is said to glorify himself. To glory in someone or something means: to feel deep or great joy or pride, or pleasure because of him or it. It is a way of expressing deep satisfaction and excitement or good feelings in someone or something.
To glory in God, on the other hand, means: to enjoy or take pleasure in his character, nature, divine love or perfection, and even in his creation, including human beings. The scripture confirms that men (human beings) are created for God’s glory and his pleasure (Is. 43:7). God went out of his way to create humanity to glorify him on earth. Jesus, in teaching the disciples to pray, ends it by saying that the kingdom, the power and glory forever belong to God (Matt. 6:13). While the scripture is full of commands that man should glory in God, it is unfortunate that humans still glory in many other things, including themselves. Yet Paul said in 2 Corinthians 10:17 that he who glories, let him glory in the Lord God. In Today’s reading, God speaks to Jeremiah in v. 23, enumerating very common things that humans are known to glory in. These include: wisdom of the wise man, might of the mighty man, and riches of the rich man. He went ahead to instruct the man who glories, what he should glory in: that is, the fact that he understands and knows him, that He is the Lord God who exercises loving-kindness, judgment and righteousness in the earth (v.24). He concludes by saying that in all these He delights and He derives pleasure from them. The question is, in what or whom do you glory? Your answer as a believer should be in nothing but God, the creator of the universe and all that is in it.
Now knowing whom to glory in, it is important to know how best to glory in him. We are enjoined to do everything for the glory of God, that is, all our actions should reflect God’s nature, character, attributes and focus. Aside from this broad instruction, we can learn a lot from the scripture on specifics such as: bearing fruits that would endure (John 15:8); letting your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matt. 5:16); whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31); knowing that you were bought at a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s (1 Cor. 6:20); have your conduct honourable among unbelievers, who when they speak against you as an evil doer, may by your good works which they observe, glorify God for you (1 Peter 2:12).
Some of the benefits from glorifying God include: being able to experience peace, joy and love, and the overall fulfilment that comes from him. God will never give his glory to another (Is. 48:11), nor his praise to graven images (Is. 42:8). Note that you cannot glory in those you do not know or have a relationship with. To know God is to know his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, whom He sent to the world to die for the sins of mankind, and reconcile them back to him. So, accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, and then you are qualified to glory in him and God the Father.
CHRISTIE KUPOLUYI
To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”
If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest.
Prayer:
Eternal God, we give you all the glory and honor that are due to You.
Father, we further glorify you for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, who paid the price for man’s salvation and freedom.
Precious Lord, all glory and adoration we give you for you are worthy to receive them from all mankind. Be exalted forever and ever.
Lord, wake up the church to teach believers to give all glory and honour due to you.
Father, please let your glory flood our land and coupled with revival, none of the people will ever remain the same again – leaders and followers.
