Today’s Reading:
Psalm 143:7-12 (8)
Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you. (v. 8)
The psalmist being overwhelmed by frequent harassment from his oppressors (vv. 3-4), almost gave up hope, because he was caught in the web of paralyzing fear and deep depression. He looked up to the Lord in expectation for his past love, mercy, righteousness, and faithfulness, and remembers God's past acts and longed for the renewal(v.5). He wisely keyed to the wisdom of God because he knew that God's instruction would set him free. He prayed for wisdom to save him from the present darkness. He not only longed for God's deliverance, he knew God's Spirit brings goodness, asked the Lord to teach him His will and by His Spirit leads him on level ground (vv. 8-10).
David in asking God to lead him on a level ground, could be asking for a balanced emotions considering what he was going through. He was able to place himself secured in the hand of God because he knew whom he believed and served. You are reading this; do you know the God you believe and serve? He trusted God to deliver him from his trouble, free him from distress, punish his oppressors and gave him victory over his enemies, and God did.
Whatever we may be going through at this time, to be able to withstand the schemes, overcome the snares, and threats of the evil one, it is good to take our case to the Lord in prayer. Take refuge in the tower of the name of Jesus and rely on the strength he provides.
We should be completely calm and entrust our lives to the Lord. So that the enemy will not drag us down the depth of depression and despair. It is only God that can lead us in the paths of victory and give us joy. Leaning, hoping, and lifting up our souls unto God in prayer, is part of our act of faith which the Lord will positively respond to. Being able to express our true feelings to the Lord strengthens our relationship with Him.
We should tailor our prayers to fit into God’s consistent character, and plans; and not our own will. In such state, we do not need to tell our tales to those who would not help but aggravate the situation. As we reach out to God in prayer, the Holy Spirit will remind us of His past works (v.6); we are able to trust Him (v.8) and we are encouraged to obey God’s command (v.10). Prayer of guidance that does not acknowledge God’s power and authority to save, is self-conceited and self-cantered. But when we ask God to rearrange our priorities, our mind is awakened, and our will is stirred towards doing the will of God.
