I AM IN THE FATHER; AND THE FATHER IS IN ME

Today’s Reading:

Acts 4:5-20 (Jn. 14:10)

"Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words I say to you I do not say on My own initiative or authority, but the Father, abiding continually in Me, does His works [His attesting miracles and acts of power]." (Jn. 14:10 AMPV)

A story was told of a church group who invited a speaker to their meeting and instructed him not to mention the name Jesus Christ, he should talk only about God. When the surprised speaker asked why, they told him that "some of the prominent members of the church are uncomfortable with the name of Jesus." The speaker made them to understand that without the name of Jesus Christ, there is no message!

The name of Jesus Christ - is the core of the gospel; the heart of our faith; and our hope. The name of our Lord Jesus Christ is a strong tower of security which the righteous run into, and they were saved.

Persecution was a common experience of God's people in the Bible, especially in the New Testament. God's people faced hostility and opposition (Deut.30:7; Neh. 4:1-3; Matt24:34-37; Luke 11:49-51) because of the name of Jesus Christ. The early church of the first century suffered severe hostility and persecution. And it is said of this quote that ‘the blood of the martyr is the seed of the church’. No wonder the church is growing and marching on in the strength of Jesus Christ the Captain of the host of heaven. Jesus also, was persecuted and he warned his followers to expect the same treatment, including those who would later believe (Mark 13:9). But he promised that the Holy Spirit would supply the strength needed to weather the storm and still stand firm. We read about more of this persecution in the book of Acts. And it is in the same book that we read about the tremendous ways the Holy Spirit empowered the early Christians with boldness, wisdom and courage to proclaim the gospel.

The instance of this boldness is what is read today. Peter and John faced persecution and hostility with courage and power in the Holy Spirit (vv. 1-22).

To claim to know and believe in God and not mention the name of His Son, Our Saviour Jesus Christ is a contradiction in terms. Jesus himself clearly talked about the unique relationship between Himself and God the Father - "Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?” (Jn. 14:10). "I and the Father are one" (Jn. 19:30) - confirming his deity. That was why he said, "You believe in God; believe also in Me” (Jn. 14:11). Paul also confirmed that Jesus is the very nature of God and is equal with God (Phil. 2:6).

We should not shy away from the name of Jesus; it is only by his name we can have Eternal Life. There is no other name under the heavens by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12).

Prayer:

  1. Lord Jesus, appear in my life and empower me to share with others all that I know and have experienced of you, in Jesus name.

  2. Father, that I may know Christ and experience the power of His Resurrection, in Jesus name.

  3. Lord Jesus, pass through my life and family and leave your presence in a way that I will never forget, in Jesus name.

  4. Father deliver your ministers, pastors and church leaders from satanic diversion, in Jesus name.
