Life has shown me ‘shege’. Has life shown you ‘shege’? ‘Shege’ in its original Hausa language means “illegitimate”. It is often used as a curse word to say that someone is useless or is of questionable origin (that they are bastards). ‘Shege’ is commonly used today to describe extreme and unpleasant situations or circumstances. For Example, ‘my eye don see shege’. It can refer to financial difficulties, physical or mental stress, difficult tasks or unexpected events. Our daily experiences affect our spirituality and vice versa. Jesus’ words today cut through the complexity and confusion of daily experience, bringing us back to the essentials of our relationship with Him: to trust, to follow, and to live in Him who is our Way, our Truth, and our Life.
What does Jesus mean when He calls Himself the Way, Truth and Life?
Jesus is the Way — not just a guide, but the very path by which we reach the Eternal Father. Why is He the only way? It is because this is how God, in His wisdom and love, has designed the journey of salvation: that we come to Him through His Son. More profoundly, the vastness of the divide between humanity and God is something we could never cross on our own. Without Christ, we are lost. It is only by walking with Jesus, by knowing Him intimately, that we can hope to enter into the mystery of God’s infinite glory. For you and I to make that cross over to the Father, we must take Jesus at His word here and now when he says, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). You only obey those whom you love (or respect). And you only love those you trust. So, who do you trust (Proverbs 3:5-6 gives you a clue. Look it up!)?
Jesus is the Truth — not a truth among many, but Truth itself, made flesh. As the Son of the Father, He embodies the ultimate answer to every human longing for meaning, purpose, and understanding. In Him, we find the truth about who we are (we are children of God made in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26,27), where we come from (we are from God and we are returning to Him (Philippians 3:20), and what we are called to become, we are called to be Christ-like and co-heirs with Christ to His Father’s kingdom (Romans 8:017).
Jesus is the Life — Christ gives life in abundance (this reminds me of an old chorus, “He gave us life in abundance…”). When we follow His way and accept His truth, our souls are filled with true life. He asks us to “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34). Without Him, we may exist, but spiritually we are empty (dead even!); with Him, we share in the divine life that conquers even death. You experience this resurgence of life every day when you fill your mind 0with the Scriptures, spending time in silent meditation, when you attend Mass and receive the Eucharist, when you visit the Blessed Sacrament and spend quality time with the Lord, when you assist someone in need and offer up your daily ‘sheges’ as sacrifices for your sins and the sins of the world. God is truly alive in you and gives you beauty for ‘shege’ when you unite your daily grind with the sacrifice of His beloved Son.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”
If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest. Prayer:
Prayer:
Lord, I offer You my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation of sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month. Amen.
Eternal Father, You have given me beauty for ashes, joy for seasons of sorrow, hope in my despair and provision amidst scarcity. Help me to keep my focus on Your Beloved Son, who is the Way, Truth and Life, and to trust His guidance, His word and His abiding presence in me. Amen.
