Today’s Reading:

Matt. 1:18-25 (21)

"And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." (v. 21 NKJV)

Joseph found his betrothed wife, Mary, pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit, yet the Holy Spirit warned Joseph to accept the pregnancy and not to divorce Mary. In the ancient Jewish setting, pledged to be married is as binding as today's marriage. The engaged couple were legally regarded as husband and wife. Though physically it has not yet taken place (Luke 2:5). It requires a divorce to dissolve the engagement (v.19). And in this case, the law required the seemingly unfaithful wife to be stoned to death.

The angel of God asked Joseph to give the son that would be born the name JESUS (v. 21). At that time, many children were born, but only One came to be the Saviour and to be sacrificed for the sins of the world. Jesus is the Greek form and Jeshua is the Hebrew - meaning - "The Lord saves". Indicating that name is very vital to the child bearing it. This name appropriately described Jesus role and task here on earth - He will save His people Israel and also all in the world who believe in him from their sins (2:6).

Joseph was faced with a difficult choice when he discovered Mary was pregnant (vv. 18-25). He knew that taking Mary as his wife could be humiliating but he choose to obey God's command to marry her. His choice revealed four truths about him:

1) righteousness

2) discretion and sensitivity

3) responsiveness to God (v. 24)

4) self-discipline (v. 25).

In whatever situation that may confront us, God always calmly offer us options directing us to His leading, if only we would be calm and focus on Him. Only God's intervention and guidance can help us to make good decision that will move us forward in life. We cannot remove any percentage of God from our lives. We must always seek the wisdom of God, especially when our decisions affect the lives of others.

Jesus Christ is God’s only authority and the name by which all are saved. He came so that our sins would be forgiven, to give us eternal life, to free us from the power of sin, from the deceit of self and to deliver us from the evil one, its cohorts and human agents. He came to set us free from our fears and release us to realise God’s purpose for our lives. We have no choice than to surrender our lives to him so that we can find rest, lasting peace, and joy for our souls. He came to turn our darkness into light, to translate our despair into hope and save us from the power of sin, because we cannot save ourselves. Our new life starts the moment we give our lives to him.

Have you surrendered your life to Jesus, do so today as tomorrow may be too late.

Prayer:

  1. I believe that Jesus came in flesh and laid down his life and shed His blood for me on the cross of Calvary, in Jesus name.

  2. Father, as I confess the Word of God into my life, I believe and receive the power therein, into my body, soul, and spirit, in Jesus name.

  3. The name of Jesus is my authority over all powers of darkness including Satan, his cohorts, and human agents, in Jesus Christ.

  4. Jesus Christ is the Author and Finisher of my faith; and whomever the Son of God sets free, is free indeed, in Jesus name.

  5. Father by the power in the blood of Jesus, unite Your Church in love and harmony of purpose, in Jesus name.
